A 1999 romantic comedy starring Ben Affleck, Sandra Bullock, and Maura Tierney. Blythe Danner and Ronny Cox have
supporting roles as Tierny's parents.
Ben plays a book jacket copywriter named, well, Ben. The movie opens at his bachelor party. Things get a little
too racy for his grandpa, who suffers a heart attack and has to be rushed to the hospital. Ben is scheduled to fly to Savannah
to marry Bridget (Tierney), but the heart attack is just one of many "natural forces" that puts the trip - and his wedding
- in serious jeopardy.
Bullock plays Sarah, a woman Ben meets on the plane. She's also headed for Savannah. After their plane skids off
the runway during takeoff (due to another "natural force"), the two become travelling companions. She's a flaky free
spirit, a contrast to Ben's reserved copywriter. The movie turns into "Trains, Busses, and Automobiles" as they make their
way to Georgia. At one point, Bridget, who's already in Savannah, wonders out loud how a two-day trip from New York
to Georgia can take so long. I have to say, I wondered the same thing.
They finally arrive in Savannah, as a hurricane threatens to blow away the wedding. Ben must make a choice - go
through with the wedding or dump Bridget and live life on the edge with Sarah.
Overall review: * (and a half) The cast is likeable enough, but the movie as a whole left a lot to be desired.
By the end, I didn't care who Ben ended up with. I just wanted him to get there already.
