Ours is an ancient race..., proud of the many wonderous facets of our culture. Not the least of which, we are proud of our language. Awesome, melodic and eloquent, the native language of the Frostalfar today is Modern Standard Frostalf, a simplified dialect of Classical Frostalf also known as Drow. But Frostalf is not the only language spoken by Frostalfar. The journey from Niflheim to the Uplands of Midgard was a long and hard one. Upon entering the Upper Realms beyond the Mists, the Frostalfar had to journey up through the deepest reaches of the Underside. Upwards they journeyed through the Nithavellir, the Dark Fields, ancestral home of the Dvergar and then still upwards to Spindelhalla encountering the Kobolds as well. Along the way Frostalf nobles of House Greywolf learned the Dark Speech (Buurzblah), the common language of the Underside, and taught it to their brothers and sisters. It was not until we had arrived in the Uplands that we learned Norse, the common language of Midgard. As a result all Frostalfar are trilingual or at the very least bilingual.
In guild we speak only Frostalf or Dark Speech (Buurzblah), or a combination of both. Most of the younger Frostalfar who were born in the Underside on the journey upward are more fluent in Dark Speech than they are in Frostalf. Either language is perfectly acceptable for guild communication. Some members also speak Norse as well as the guild languages. But Norse is a clumsy, guttural language and best left for non-Frostalfar. Norse is never spoken in guild.
