DAML/OWL
I was the program manager for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Agent Markup Language (DAML) Integration effort from the beginning of the program in August 2000 until I retired from BBN Technologies in April 2003. Details about the DAML program can be found at the daml.org website. I worked with a great group of people on the DAML program within BBN, including Mike Dean (Principle Investigator) and Mark Wilcomb, Dave Rager, Troy Self, Brandon Amundson, Joe Coffman, and Jeremy Lerner.
DAML is a formal language for expressing ontologies using an XML-based syntax. Complex ontologies can be very verbose making it difficult for many people to quickly grasp the complete structure of a specific ontology. To facilitate the visualization of DAML ontologies, I created a Microsoft Visio template called VisioDAML. Details on VisioDAML can be found here.
The W3C Web Ontology Language (OWL) is based on the DAML effort. I have now released VisioOWL to support the graphical visualization of OWL ontologies. VisioOWL can be found at SimWebCentral and here.
