News: Athens, Greece - Gal Fridman became the first Israeli to win an Olympic gold medal
on Wednesday, August 25, 2004, after edging Greece's Nikolaos Kaklamanakis for the men's windsurfing title.
Fridman
dedicated his award to the memory of 11 Israeli athletes killed after a Palestinian attack on the Olympic village in Munich,
Germany, in 1972.
"Gal Fridman is our greatest athlete," said Gilad Lustig, the Israeli team manager. "To see our
flag displayed and hear our national anthem played at the awards ceremony is a moment we have long been waiting for."
