At the end of the Sterling Highway is Homer. The key to Homer is The Spit, a narrow piece of land that extends 3 miles out into Katchemak Bay. The Spit features an odd mixture of stores, charter fishing/cruise companies marinas, a hotel, and The Salty Dog.
The Spit from the hill far above the town of Homer
Halibut caught off one of the charter boats along The Spit.
The first mile or so of The Spit is relatively unoccupied, but not completely. Somebody was actually living in this boat, which is permanently in drydock and has obviously seen better days.
A series of about 7 shots sewn together of The Spit, the bay, and the mountains from outside our cabin sitting on the hill far above the town of Homer (scroll horizontally to see entire picture). This was about 11:30 at night as the sun is just setting behind the mountains which lie behind me -- note that the tip of The Spit, as well as the top of the mountains just beyond the tip, are still in the sun. The fact that The Spit is 3 miles long gives some perspective on how broad an area this picture covers.
