WORTHINGTON STATE FOREST, NJ

July 2005 trip to NJ's beautiful Delaware Water Gap included camping, hiking, floating down the Delaware, and kayaking in nearby Swartswood State Park. The highlight was the hike to the Appalachian Trail and Sunfish Pond, including 2 black bear sightings.

bp8.JPG (65716 bytes) After hiking from the Delaware River to the Appalachian Trail via the Douglas Trail, we came upon this black bear. We made noise and it appeared to be wandering off to the left. Problem was, it was really coming towards us through the brush to the left. While it stopped to forage, we made more noise and it's head darted up, telling me that it hadn't heard us the first time. As we peered around two trees, it wandered off to the left and we were able to proceed on to Sunfish Pond.

As the Appalachian Trail runs around the pond, you come to this rocky area where many have apparently been inspired to express themselves.

About 100 different rock cairns have been created by hikers.

Good thing that they saved this space back in the '70's.
