One of a series of 4 ladders taking you 140 feet up to a cave believed to have been used for ceremonial rites.
Here is the "cave" at the top of the ladders. The structure in the middle is a ceremonial room or "kiva." The kiva is covered with a small opening. The two protruding sticks you see are the top of a ladder that drops down about 8 feet into the room (approximately 10' x 10').
While
this cave was not easily accessible for many, there were more-easily-reached
small cave-like dwellings at the base of the cliffs.
Looking
down at partially excavated ruins of what was a pueblo or village named
Tyonyi in Frijoles Canyon.
It
was two-stories high with "rooms" that were only about 5 feet long (maybe
4 feet wide). Obviously these were not big people.
