The flag above is the "LONE STAR," Liberia's national flag. The eleven horizontal stripes represent the eleven signers of the declaration of independence and the constitution of the Republic of Liberia; the blue field symbolizes the continent of Africa; the five pointed white star depicts Liberia as the first "independent republic" on the continent of Africa; the red color designates "valor"; the white, "purity"; and the blue, "fidelity." Although these representations are uniquely Liberian, the flag itself is a replica of "Old Glory," the national flag of the United States. In his 1863 book, "Wanderings in West Africa from Liverpool to Fernando", Richard F. Burton noted that parts of the design of the Lone Star was "Stolen from Texas and not paid for.

These are some pictures of Liberia and Liberians during the 19th and early 20th century. One of the images show African-Americans from Arkansas leaving for Liberia; another image shows Liberians welcoming the Falkner Commission in 1910. The Falkner Commission, which was dispatched to Liberia by President Taft to review ways and means of restructuring Liberia's finances, approved a $1.7 million loan for Liberia. Ironically, the loan compromised the sovereignty of Liberia for over three decades.
