Welcome to the R2J Web!

Updated: 2008-09-12

This page will link you to the Cockatoo Web Pages (for the Cockatoo Hiker). Our Poolesville.Org site provides some information about the town and the surrounding area.

What's New

We have updated the page to use the embedded Slide Show feature for the web albums. The Picasa web albums require that you use a recent web browser with the current version of the Flash player, but the images should be visible on some older versions of IE and Firefox. It has been tested with MAC OS9.2.2 IE and IE V6 on WindowsXP and Win2K, even IE V5.5 on Win95. Select the image twice to open the slide show in a larger size on the Picasa web site. You may download the images from there in full size (for non-commercial purposes only.) If you don't see two miniature slide shows you might have to refresh the page.

In June 2006 we adopted Mozart's "younger brother." His name is "Amadeus." (See "In Search of Mozart's Younger Brother" for the story.) At eight months Amadeus was already 25% larger than Kaipo and seems to be growing as large as his older brother Mozart. For pictures of Amadeus select the image at left to see pictures of his first 8 months on the Google Albums site .

A rare forest orchid emerges in spring on Sugarloaf Mountain. We took Amadeus along to supervise our search for the Pink Lady slipper on the mountain. View pictures at Google Picasa Albums site.

Hiking Cockatoo Pictures

Amadeus' training for being a Hiking Cockatoo began last October. See our Google Albums page for the Hiking Cockatoo.

Pinot Grigio Bottling at Sugarloaf Mountain Winery

After a hike on Sugarloaf Mountain, the winery makes a nice cap at the end of the day. The last week of March brought the bottling of the Pinot Grigio with a very interesting mobile bottling plant. We took up Jim McKenna's invitation and went to see it for ourselves (pictures and text.)

New Family Members

Kaipo, a Triton Cockatoo

Kaipo on the Blue Trail

Two new Cockatoos have joined our family during the past year. The first was "Kaipo", from the Hawaiian word for "Beloved sweetheart." He is a male Triton Cockatoo, like Mozart but a bit smaller. He came from LTB aviaries in Florida via the Featherheads store in Sterling, Va. in October 2005. See "Stalking the Blue Eyed Triton" on the CockatooWeb pages for the story on finding a new companion. (Of course, we still miss Mozart.) The second came from Mozart's parents at the American Bird Company in Falls Church, VA. They hatched three male chicks in the Spring of 2006. In June (2006) we adopted one of Mozart's "younger brothers". His name is "Amadeus" and he came home with us in August.

Pele, a female Eclectus parrot

Pele the Eclectus Parrot

Pele the Eclectus parrot has "adopted" these two Cockatoo rambunctious babies as her family (as long as they keep their distance). She has no hesitation about squawking at them if they are too close or squawking at us if she thinks we are mishandling her "kids". Pele had been quite sick for some time. After having some trouble with her legs and feet she still has to wear a collar occasionally after making steady improvement during the past few months. Her leg twitching waxes and wanes. We place the collar on when she starts to damage her legs. As much as she hates to wear it, the collar seems to break the cycle and allows her skin to heal and the leg twitches diminish or go away completely ..for a while. You can see her on the bird cam page.

Mozart died on October 25, 2004. The sad details can be found on the page about Mozart's illness. The Cockatoo Pages still provide information about Mozart and information for questions you may have about Cockatoos as companion animals. We are in the process of rewriting these pages to incorporate our experiences with the new birds. Both Kaipo and Amadeus have begun their training for hiking with us. They have been out on a number of day hikes at Sugarloaf Mountain and Harpers Ferry -but they have a lot to learn before we go on any trips further field.
