This lathe was made by the W. F. & John Barnes Co., in Rockford, Illinois, U.S.A,, sometime after 1880. It is their #6, 13"swing, and would have sold in 1896 for $150.00.

 I have no reason to think that the current paint job is the original color; it was derived from other Barnes machinery that I saw on exhibit at the Smithsonian, and it appealed to me.
