You can see the water motor (not very big, is it?) driving the belt that drives the planer.
Water motors were one of Knight's products. His wheels were competitive with the Pelton wheel, but in a contest that was held (at Grass Valley, in 1883), Pelton came out the winner.
Knight's wheel drives that planer just fine, though. But I don't like climbing up there when the belt comes off.
