The Odyssey
classic story by Homer, adapted by Julie Little
The Odyssey is Homer's epic of Odysseus' 10-year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. The Muses of Greek mythology tell the story of the hero Odysseus and his battle with mystical creatures and his long-suffering endurance of the wrath of the gods. During Odysseus' journey we're introduced to those who would keep Odysseus from his goals: Calypso, Cyclops, Circe, Scylla, and Charybdis. Many attempt to help poor Odysseus along the way, including kings, queens and goddesses, but Poseidon's displeasure reigns. Aided by the goddess Athena, Odysseus must travel to the end of the world before finally reaching his home. Meanwhile, Odysseus' son, Telemachus tries to prevent suitors from marrying his mother, Penelope. He goes on his own expedition to find word of his father and in doing so, puts his own life in jeopardy. The Odyssey ends as Odysseus returns home, wins a contest to prove his identity, and battles the suitors to retake the throne of Ithaca.
