Thanks to a tip from Debbie Alicen the Pengoddess of the North, I have been using this Flower "Frog" to hold pens and pencils on my desktop (that is my REAL desktop and not the one on my computer).
You can generally find the nice glass ones at yard sales, flea markets and antique dealers. Prices vary of course. You really need to find one with big enough and deep enough holes to hold even your largest pens. Be sure there are no sharp edges also!

4 1/2" diameter clear glass (this is like the one in the picture below) $25
5" diameter clear glass frog with 31 holes. You could put your pens, pencils, swizle sticks and marbles in this one. LARGE $50.
4 3/4" pink "depression glass" frog. Holds 19 pens. One spot of "crazing" to the glass but no chips or cracks. Real nice! $75.
2 3/4" diameter good for holding pens like a Parker 51 or Eversharp Skyline $12
