AE9YL and K9LA certainly aren't major DXpeditioners, but they do enjoy traveling and operating from foreign QTHs whenever they can.

VK Australia: October 1983

K9LA traveled to Australia in the fall of 1983 with his parents, and took along a TS-120 to operate. He made many QSOs from Hayman Island (in the Great Barrier Reef) as VK4AVV.

ZF Cayman Islands: 1985 to the present

AE9YL and K9LA started visiting ZF in February 1985. These visits have been a combination of vacation and contest operating. K9LA initially was ZF2AY, but traded for ZF2LA in 1997. AE9YL initially was ZF2LU, but traded for ZF2YL in 2002.

YK Syria: February 2001

At the 2000 Pacific Northwest DX Convention in Vancouver (British Columbia), K7AR asked AE9YL and K9LA to join the forthcoming DXpedition to Syria. The YK9A team operated for just over a week from Damascus. The team included K7AR, N7RO, VE7CC, VA7MI, W4DR, N4CFL, W4PRO, AE9YL, and K9LA.

OJ0 Market Reef: July 2002

AE9YL and K9LA visited Finland in July 2002 to participate in the WRTC2002 activities in and around Helsinki. Prior to WRTC2002, AE9YL and K9LA made a side trip to Market Reef for several days. The weather was great (in the 70s with a light breeze) and AE9YL gave out many YL DXCC QSOs.

ZA Albania: November 2003

At the 2003 Pacific Northwest DX Convention in Vancouver (BC), OH2BH asked K9LA to participate in Project Goodwill Albania. This was an effort that brought Amateur Radio into the college-level curriculum at the Polytechnic University of Tirana. During Week 2 of the project, G3OKA, K7WX, and K9LA taught antenna, propagation, transmitter interference, and CEPT courses to 4th and 5th year electronics engineering students. This (along instruction by others during Weeks 1, 3, 4, and 5) resulted in 39 new ZA licenses. When university duties allowed, AE9YL and K9LA visited elementary schools in Tirana, enjoyed the opera La Traviata at the Tirana Opera House, and operated from Tirana as ZA/K9LA.

HV Vatican: June 2005

During a vacation to Rome in the summer of 2005, K9LA had the opportunity to operate as HV0A one evening. Several North Amercians were worked on 20m, but the limited operating time prevented more QSOs.
