State Middle School Action!

Vista Scores 2nd in State!

At both the high school and middle school levels, there are three state championship events in scholastic chess: the "Action" (quick) chess championships, the State Individual championships, and the biggie, the State Team championships.

The event Vista, Lynden and Cascade Middle Schools just participated in was the WHSCA Middle School "Action" chess championships, held January 13 at Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood.

"Action" chess means each player receives only 30 minutes apiece for the entire game (one hour total, if both players use up all of their time; which they usually don't).

There were two divisions, the Open (expert) division, and the Reserve (novice) division (for those rated 900 and below, and those without a chess rating). The event featured players from Lynden to Vancouver, and was sanctioned and rated by the Washington High School Chess Association.

The Vista Middle School Open Division team of Matt Schwede, Michael Draper and Gert Vyaersi scored a total of 7 wins to place second in State. Matt Schwede tied for 2nd in State in the individual scoring, losing only one game to Ed Mitte of Meadowdale Middle School, Edmonds.

In the Reserve Division, Vista placed first in State, scoring 11 wins among their top three finishers. Jeremy Jusak placed first overall on tiebreaks, winning four games and losing one, while Gabe Rader placed fourth. Josh Nicholson turned in a 7th grade Bronze Medal performance.

Also in the Reserve Divison, the Lynden Middle School team placed 2nd. Alex Kurtis placed 2nd, losing only to Vista's Jusak, while his brother Matt Kurtis placed 6th.

Cascade Middle School of Sedro-Woolley also showed well in their first state-level competition. The team of Ed Francy, Jared Brown and Sean Rowe scored six wins.
