Chess -- A Moment to Learn, a Lifetime to Master

Learn to Play Chess

To enjoy chess, you just need to know three things:
1. How to set up the pieces
2. How the six pieces move
3. How the game ends (get the King!)

If you set your printer margins to 0.7 inches, you can print out the Rules of Chess, and they'll all fit on one page.

For a well done online tutorial, you can visit the ChessKIDS Academy. The presentation is aimed for younger kids, but don't let that fool you -- the content is excellent.

The Chess Magnet School Toolbox will also walk you through the rules in a clear, straightforward fashion. Or if you prefer television, visit How To Play Chess and watch the online videos.

Okay, Let's Play

Now, to practice moving the pieces, there's two places Coach recommends. You can practice against Little Chess Partner (part of ChessKIDS Academy), and can choose to let the computer start off with all of its pieces, or just some of them. Also, the Chess Magnet School Toolbox lets you not only play against the computer, but you can practice your basic checkmates too. (Both sites use Java -- wait for it to load.)

Come Join the Action

Besides informal pickup games at lunch, the Ferndale High School Chess Club meets during chess season (usually mid-October through February) every Thursday evening from 6:45pm to 8:30pm in Room 611. Feel free to contact Coach Kaech with any questions.
