Last Season - Lynden Retains Crown

Fourteen high school teams played in the 06-07 NWL season, the largest contingent since the inception of the league nine years ago. Lynden showed their strength by winning all eight of their matches and taking first by a healthy margin, anchored by Category I player Lane VanWeerdhuizen. Sehome, although graduating a significant portion of their 3rd-in-State team from last year, still showed their depth by taking clear second. Ferndale clinched third by defeating Sedro-Woolley in the crucial semi-final round.

Some facts about high school chess in Washington

For several decades now the Washington High School Chess Association (WHSCA) has organized most major scholastic chess events for the state, including the Washington State High School Team Chess Championships. They have also provided structure and oversight to the many interscholastic chess leagues in Washington.

Nine years ago the Northwest League became the newest WHSCA league, providing league chess competition for high schools in Whatcom, Skagit and Island counties.

WHSCA leagues range from the large Seattle Metro League (18 high school teams) to the Puget Sound League (4 high schools). Last year 36 teams qualified and participated at the State Championships. A team must place in the upper half of its league in order to qualify for State.

This year's Washington State High School Team Championships will be held February 8-9, 2008 at Edmonds-Woodway High School.
