The Diagnosis
You find yourself sitting across from a professional, who just spent 2 hours “evaluating” your child. Words are uttered, a diagnosis you prayed you would not hear. In your heart, you new this was possible, maybe even probable, but having a professional validate your deepest fears is an experience you will never forget.

“Autism, your son has autism”. Like the vortex that forms at the drain in your bathtub, you feel the air being sucked from your lungs. The room begins to spin and a pain greater than you have ever felt in the past holds your heart in a death grip.

You feel yourself falling backward, as if to remove yourself from this stranger, this professional that has delivered the worse news you have ever received. You want to run to your baby, hold him tight in your arms, press your face against his warm sweet neck and feel his long curls on your face.

Run with him! Run as fast as you can! Maybe if you run fast enough, drive far enough the words will be left far behind. If you get as many miles possible between you and the professional, you will find a place where there is no “autism” no “cognitive delays”. A place where your child blossoms and flourishes and is loved by all…..Heaven.

Heaven. We will get there when the time is right. What do we do now, while waiting for heaven to come? Bake chocolate chip cookies with your children. Prepare for the upcoming camping trip. Laugh, love, play, pray, work, smile, learn, cuddle, kiss and laugh again. Life is good. God is great and your child is magnificent.3-05-07003.jpg

Gram Gram Will be Home Soon
I don't know if everyone has been aware or not, but Kory and I have been flying solo for the past month. Our cheerleader and #1 backup parent, my mom, has been in Costa Rica for the past month.

While day to day routines have not been affected, I am beginning to feel exhausted without the weekly breaks my mom so generously and lovingly offers us.

Without complaint and always with a smile she swoops in and takes over as preschool entertainment chairwoman. When the children are sleeping she is busily completing projects she's started around our house, preparing a meal, mopping floors, any number of things that she thinks will make my life easier.

I'm glad she had the opportunity to get away and rest. It seems she retired from one job (LADWP) and jumped directly into another (Gram Gram/Nanny/Housekeeper/Cook) and this new job is much more demanding than Director of Corporate Purchasing ever was. The pay stinks too.

Well mom, I'm glad you had a chance to "get away" and I'm even more happy that you are now on your way home!

We love you and missed you VERY MUCH!dsc00559.jpg

So the Little Stinker CAN Crawl!

Belly Jean up until a few days ago has been getting around quite effectively by skooching around on her fat little behind using her legs as oars. She swings both legs over to one side, propels herself forward, then swings them to the other side and repeats the process until she reaches her chosen destination.

I thought for a time that this was going to continue to be her mode of choice until she decides to walk. Two days ago however, I caught her testing the effectiveness of using her hands and knees to get around. Once she caught me peeking, she reverted to the skooching.

It would not matter much to me if she does not choose to crawl. Some babies never do. The “experts” do not quantify crawling as a developmental milestone any longer. The skooching does have its drawbacks though.

Bella is systematically wearing the seat out of every pair of pants she owns. A tushy can only take so much wear and tear; my little imp is busy trying to keep up with her four older brothers so her drawers are threadbare.

Skooching also draws more attention to my little tribe than we already get. Most people have never seen a baby get around in the fashion that Bella does. I have, but generally they are people without the use of their lower limbs.

Will she abandon the skooching entirely in favor of crawling? Will she launch directly into walking? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, she looks darn cute in the Easter bonnet Auntie Shell bought her, so does Seannie.
