When buying for a baby you should consider his level of development.
Newborn babies (0-2 months) spend a lot of time sleeping. When they are awake they love to gaze upon
the human face. Non-breakable mirrors offer them an opportunity to see a face they will one day be very familiar with…their
own! Some of my favorite mirrors can hang on the side of the crib or bassinet and offer a recording feature that plays back
babies first coos, encouraging him to vocalize. Baby wraps or slings for the newborn are beneficial because they offer the
ability to stay close to mom or dad while providing a “hands free” capability for parents.
Infants from 2-6 months are ready to interact and can “play” with objects. Rattles help
develop large motor skills as baby learns to grasp and shake them. After a time she will realize that she is able to produce
the sound by moving the toy. Soft blocks, books and balls are easy for baby to hold and manipulate and she will enjoy chewing
on them and batting them around. Baby will also be ready to practice sitting on her own and nursing pillows are excellent
in this capacity. Activity gyms offer baby an array of activities while lying on her back and some offer interesting colors,
shapes and textures while baby plays on her tummy. An important thing to remember about young babies, they learn with ALL
of their senses. Touch, taste, sight, hearing and smell all play a part in developing your child’s intellect; try to
find items that appeal to all senses.
Once your baby falls into the 6-12 month range she is probably mobile, or will be very shortly. Toys
that encourage her to crawl, pull herself up and walk are popular with this crowd. Be careful what you choose. Lately some
common choices have been questioned for their safety. Make sure you never leave your little one unattended, even for a moment.
At 12 to 24 months your baby is becoming a “toddler”. The name pretty much means exactly
as it sounds. For you first time parents you will know exactly what I am talking about as soon as you witness your little
angel lurching about like a drunken sailor trying to find his sea legs. Many toddlers will be ready for some outdoor ride-on
toys. If they are sitting well on their own, a wagon is a good choice. It is also a good time to start experimenting with
crafting clay, finger paints, crayons, chalkboards and sidewalk chalk, just keep a close eye on your little Picasso, lest
she try to nibble on some of the art supplies.
Now that I have offered some developmental gift ideas for your baby, I feel that I would be remiss if I didn’t
mention something that concerns me. Some toys that are marketed for young babies and children are so loud that they hurt my
ears. Rest assured, if something seems too loud to you, it is definitely too loud for your baby. Excessive volume has been
shown to cause hearing damage. Please don’t take that chance with your baby. If you feel you must purchase a noisy toy,
make sure it has a volume control. If you find that is doesn’t have a volume control you can place tape over the speaker
holes to muffle the sound.
