Choosing Appropriate Gifts for the Young Child (2-5 years old)
The holidays are upon us once again. Now is the time to make some crucial decisions about gift giving. Do you succumb
to the pleas of your four year old for the latest “hot” toy, even if you know it will be unused and dusty after
the novelty wears off? It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of purchasing the latest and greatest toy being marketed.
But it may not be in the best interest for your child.
Are you are inclined to get more for your dollar and find something that interests your child and stimulates brain growth?
Then take a few moments to consider several things before reaching for your wallet.
Age of the child: purchasing items that are too advanced increases frustration and can pose a hazard if parts are
small. Toys that are not challenging can result in boredom.
Durability of the item: nothing is more exasperating than a new toy that breaks often. Make certain that the item can
take the punishment your three old can dish out.
Educational value: Does the product encourage intellectual development or help refine large and fine motor skills?
Of the three considerations, the third may be the most difficult to assess. If you are having trouble determining the
educational value of an item, ask yourself these questions:
Does the toy require your child to use his/her imagination? Does it encourage use of language? Does it involve problem
solving? Does it require movement? Does it promote interaction?
If you are still unsure, there are some tried but true stand bys that almost always include the criteria listed above.
- Puzzles use the same problem solving skills that are necessary for mathematics.
- Building blocks help teach spatial awareness, stimulate creativity and refine both small and large motor skills.
- Arts and crafts such as finger paints, crafting dough, watercolors, crayons and the like, involve creativity and fine
motor skill development.
- Puppets, dolls and dress up attire encourage the use of language skills and role playing.
- Cars, trucks, trains and other transportation toys encourage use of imagination.
- Books develop a love of reading in your child and give a life long gift.
- Instruments such as: tambourines, maracas, drums, keyboards, and other musical istruments , help draw out the musical
genius in your little one.
- Music cd’s are always popular with children and encourage dance and language development.
- Balls, bikes, slides, climbing equipment, swing sets and other outdoor toys encourage large motor skill development and
get your child outside for exercise and fresh air.
