BE SMART! BE SAFE! There are measures you can take to minimize your chances of being assaulted.
DON'T WALK ANYWHERE ALONE! Walk with a friend whenever possible.
Walk in well-lit areas.
Be aware of your surroundings:
- take notice of buildings (architectural features, doorways, alleyways--anywhere a person could hide)
- objects (parked cars, street signs, lightposts, litter or debris, etc.--anything that could be used as a physical barrier or weapon if needed)
- and ambient noise caused by vehicles and weather.
Take notice of people in the vicinity. Potential assailants will most likely not take chances with assaulting a person they think would recognize them.
When driving, leave sufficient room in front, behind and on either side to drive off or escape on foot, if necessary. Pay attention to vehicles and people around you at traffic lights and stop signs.
Park as close to buildings as possible, to minimize walking distance.
Try to park in well-lit areas near other vehicles.
Have your vehicle key in your hand, as opposed to reaching into your purse once you reach your vehicle (keys can also be used as slashing or stabbing weapons!).
Go out as a group whenever possible. Avoid going to bars/clubs alone.
Know your limit: stay within it! Don't drink alcohol excessively.
Don't leave your drink unattended or accept drinks from people you don't know well. If a person asks to buy you a drink, walk to the bar with him/her and watch the drink being prepared.
Be selective about who you leave the building with, to smoke a cigarette or for any other purpose.
Don't be afraid to approach bar/club staff with any problems (obnoxious or abusive people, for instance). Part of their job is to keep you happy so you want to return!
Once again, be aware of your surroundings. If need be, pool cues and balls, soft-tip darts, or glassware can be used as weapons.
If you feel uncomfortable for any reason, LEAVE!
Only attend house parties if you know the hosts and feel comfortable in the house.
Once again, take notice of people and objects within the building.
If you feel uncomfortable for any reason, then LEAVE!
When talking on a cellphone, be aware that a potential assailant could be listening to whatever you're saying.
Try not to give phone numbers, addresses or other personal information when talking on your cellphone in public places.
Avoid saying such things as: "O.K., so we're meeting up at (place) at (time)? Cool!" "Wow! I'm so wasted!" or "Come pick me up- I'm at...", especially in public places.
LADIES, GET OFF THE PHONE WHEN YOU'RE WALKING ALONE! You can't hear footsteps approaching, and you are generally unaware of what's going on around you.
REMEMBER, IF YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN A LIFE-OR-DEATH SITUATION, YOUR SURVIVAL IS WHAT MATTERS!
