February 13, 2005 -- Maintenance #7 (Day 40) Katie's fever fluctuated most of the day yesterday. It did go above the 'magical number' of 100.4 and hit 100.5 three times over the course of the day. When I spoke with the oncology fellow on-call at the hospital, he said that although it sounded like Katie just had a virus, it wasn't worth taking a chance that it could be something very serious, and we should get to the ER as soon as we could. We ended up taking Katie to the ER at 10pm. The ER at CHOP was packed with sick kids last night! Fortunately, we had a mask for Katie to wear to help protect her from the germs that were flying around, and the ER takes the onco kids right away. The triage nurse said it was onco-fever night -- with many of the onco patients coming in with fevers like us. They did a CBC and pulled an extra vial of blood to do a culture to check for the possibility of a bacterial infection. Her ANC came back at 1730. She got her infusion of Ceftriaxone and lots of fluids (she was a bit dehydrated). We left the hospital by 4am. This morning, she's still running a low-grade fever of around 99.5. Hopefully we won't have to repeat last night again. Once her port comes out, the fevers won't be as much of an issue. We are all very sleep deprived today, especially since Kyle woke at 7:30 and we didn't get to bed until after 5 this morning. Katie is really bummed that we didn't get to stay over night (she loves the playroom on the onco floor). We are very glad that Katie can continue to get the remainder of her chemo, and we are home!! Thank you for your continued prayers for our little sweetheart!! NEXT: February 22, 2005 -- Maintenance #7 (Days 41-47) |
