October 19, 2004 -- Maintenance #6 (Days 0-6) FOUR MONTHS TO OT!! Katie went to CHOP on October 14 for her spinal tap and chemo to her central nervous system (LP). Everything went very well. The steroids and vincristine (VCR) have hit her hard this month again. She's been very moody, nauseous, her back and legs hurt her, and she's very tired. She's been going to school and napping as soon as she gets home. Katie usually bounces back within a week or so. This month's cravings are chicken soup with carrots and curly pasta, and lemons (peel and all)!! She goes back to see Dr. Julie on November 10. We met a family at the day hospital at CHOP when Katie had her LP. Their four-year-old son, Ian, had just been diagnosed with leukemia. They were waiting to find out what type of leukemia. We shared some tearful moments together discussing the common events leading up to his and Katie's diagnosis. We pray that Ian's diagnosis has a favorable outcome and his treatment goes smoothly. Katie wants to go back to taking swimming classes again. Most afternoons, when Kyle is napping, Katie will nap (and sometimes mommy will too!). She says that she's "too tuckered out" to go during the week, so she'll be going on Saturday mornings starting in November. We have set a date for Katie's Make-A-Wish trip for the end of April. Katie wants to go to Disney World and meet Kim Possible! We are hoping to spend some time there with two other families we have met whose daughters, Katie and Giovanna, also have ALL. We are looking forward to celebrating Katie being off-treatment while we are there!! For all the CHOP oncology families out there... There is a Halloween Party at the Embassy Suites Hotel on October 31st from 11:30-2:30. We are hoping to go. I heard it's a blast!! There is also a Noogiefest Halloween Party at Gilda's Club this Friday, October 22 from 6-8. This party is open to families living with cancer and their friends. We're going to try to make this one, too. You need to RSVP to both events. If anyone else is planning on going, or needs more info, please let me know. We'd love to meet up with you. Katie had such a good time at the Light the Night Walk on Saturday, October 16. It was a huge success despite the rain and cooler temps. KATIE'S WISH has exceeded our goal of $5000 and raised $5249.22, and we still have some more donations coming in! We'll have the final donation amounts that our team raised, and the total for the Montgomery County Walk, posted on Katie's web site in November. Thank you again to children of Tender Branches for making the spectacular gold and orange ribbons for our team to wear. The remainder of the ribbons will be going to the kids at the King of Prussia oncology clinic. I'll be adding photos from September through mid-October to the web site next week. Please check back then. We can't thank you enough for keeping Katie close to your hearts and in your prayers. Please continue to pray that she remains in remission. We deeply appreciate it. |
