Kate visits Jack in his glass cell

"STOP LYING TO ME, TELL ME THE TRUTH!"

"Is this it? Is this what you wanted?" Jack hands Kate an unassuming envelope from the case belonging to the marshal who arrested her (S. 1, ep. 12). She asked Jack for help in opening the case, saying that it contains guns which they need to keep out of Sawyer’s hands. Jack agrees to help only on one condition: they open it together. Inside the envelope is a toy plane. Kate won’t tell him what it means. Jack insists. She offers, “It belonged to the man I loved.” He knows there is more, but she repeats this answer. He is in her face: “Stop lying to me, tell me the truth!” Crying, she admits, “It belonged to the man I killed!” Both are the truth: the toy plane belonged to her childhood sweetheart, who died helping her escape. Ever since they first met soon after the crash and she helped stitch up his wound, Jack has relied upon Kate. Still, Kate is an enigma: the “girl next door” with straight-A’s and a criminal past. He never fully trusts her, partly because she never fully trusts him.
