Kate sits with Jack, arm in sling, by the fire

"YOU'RE ACTUALLY COMPARING YOURSELF TO JACK?"

Kate is offended by Sawyer’s suggestion that he could run the island just as well with some band aids and peroxide. Kate feels that Sawyer is disgusting and selfish: he hoards supplies culled from dead bodies; even keeps medicine from the sick. With Sawyer, it’s every man for himself. By contrast, Jack risks his own life to save others. When Jack discovers that she is a fugitive, he doesn’t let her tell him what she did, but says that it was like they all died in the crash and now have an opportunity to start over. Kate knows he means it. Still, he can be condescending at times. Kate does not like to admit it, but she is attracted to “bad boy” Sawyer, because she believes they are the same—both will do anything they have to in order to survive. When Sawyer lets it slip, however, that Jack is trapped in a cave-in and might be dead, Kate is distraught and rushes to his rescue (S. 1, ep. 7). When he emerges from the other side—safe—she throws her arms around him. He is alright except for a dislocated shoulder, and for that she makes him a sling.
