"WE HAVE TO GO BACK!"

"You're not supposed to do this!" John Locke cautions Jack not to contact a freighter off-shore. Locke believes in the power of the island: when their plane crashed upon it, not only did so many miraculously survive, but he regained the ability to walk again—and now he never wants to leave. Jack refuses to listen, however, and makes contact with the outside world. Three years later, he realizes that Locke is right. He is deeply unhappy and addicted to drugs and alcohol, which has cost him his relationship with Kate, who was going to marry him! "We made a mistake. We have to go back!" Jack tells Kate, but she refuses, now at peace with her own past--or so she thinks. Kate has faced charges for the murder she committed and been ordered to "stay put" on probation, which she readily agrees to, for she is now a mother. Finally it seems that she has stopped running--but they are living a lie. The world believes only six of them survived the plane crash--when in reality, the rest are trapped on the island, which apparently has disappeared! According to Locke, those left behind are in danger, including Claire--the actual mother of Kate's child, who Jack learns is his half sister--and Sawyer, who Kate may still have unresolved feelings for. When Locke dies, Jack is tormented by guilt that he has failed again and been unable to save everyone. Turns out that crashing on the island was the best thing to ever happen to them. It is where they have had to face the ghosts of their past and learn how to love. But the Island is not finished with them yet. In order to return, Jack must accept that some things are beyond his control and Kate must be willing to face the truth.
