Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Send my Child to Preschool? Most educators and psychologists agree that the single most important period in the development of intelligence occurs between birth and age five. A child’s mind is extremely absorbent and curiosity is at a peak during these early years. When properly nourished and stimulated, the child’s mind forms patterns for learning that will serve him well throughout life. The Montessori system has proven to be one of the most effective methods to guide a child through these critical years.

How is Keene Montessori School (KMS) Different From Other Preschools? In many preschools children are taught educational concepts in a group by a teacher. At KMS children learn concepts spontaneously as they work with the many materials throughout the classroom. They work at their own pace. Children, from ages 3 through Kindergarten, work side-by-side, and help each other. We encourage active, self-directed learning guided by the teachers.

At What Age Should a Montessori Education Begin? Maria Montessori outlined various periods of “sensitivity”. During these times, a child is more capable of and interested in learning specific concepts. At about age 3 a special sense of order, concentration, coordination, and independence begin to emerge. This time is ideal to begin at KMS to start to lay a strong foundation for future learning.

What is the Role of the KMS Teacher? Our teachers facilitate classroom activity by planning the environment in the interests of the children and help them progress from one level to the next. The teacher guides each child individually, allowing the child to choose from many activities within his range of ability. Teachers encourage children to make choices and allow the child the satisfaction of his own discovery.

What is in a KMS Classroom? Our classrooms are child-size worlds that allow children to explore life on a level they can understand. The materials are designed to stimulate exploration. This prepared environment entices the child to proceed at her own pace from simple activities to more complex ones. Through this process, the child’s natural curiosity is satisfied and she begins to experience the joy of discovering the world.

What About Socialization and Group Work? Socialization is very much part of KMS. Children interact continuously, possibly choosing to work with other children and with older children helping younger ones. Each day there is a group circle and outside play.

What Happens When my Child Leaves KMS? When children leave KMS they are usually very adaptable and can face new challenges with confidence. They usually have a positive attitude toward learning. If you would like to speak with current or alumni parents, please let us know.

Do You Encourage Parent Involvement at KMS? We feel that the more parents understand the experiences of their child in the classroom, the better they are to follow through at home. When parents do this, their child benefits even more because she has a consistent environment in which to grow and develop. We encourage parent participation through conferences, observations, assisting in the classroom, and helping with events.
