Lesli Kay
Lesli Kay reveals how she "nailed" the role of a lifetime

From the moment Lesli Kay learned that General Hospital was bringing back the feisty character of Lois Cerullo Ashton, she knew that her name was written all over it.  Sure, the actress was happily employed at the time by As the World Turns, where she'd won an Emmy playing Molly McKinnon, but it was time for a change.  "I pushed for this job at GH," she asserts.  And when push came to shove, she got what she wanted!

SINKING IN HER CLAWS

Perhaps GH had always been Kay's destiny.  As a college student, she'd always go to the student union, where students were glued to the tube, watching Luke and Laura's romance unfold.  Although never a devoted daytime viewer, GH was the one show she regularly flipped to.  Still, when she headed to L.A. for her screen test, she was a little at loss.  "I didn't know a lot about Lois.  I did know that she talks more than anybody on God's green earth... and quickly." she says, adding that she had seen predecessor Rena Sofer in the part.

Wanting to give herself the upper hand, as it were, Kay went so far as to apply Lois' signature fake nails!  "Normally, that's not a thing that I would do," she explains.  "I would figure, 'If I get the part, I'll put the nails on.'  But when I saw what a huge part it was of the character, I knew I had to.  It helped me reach who the character was.  You talk a different way when you have one-inch nails!"

A REUNION WITH NED?

Given the deadliness of Lois' press-ons, Ned is lucky she only slapped him when they came face to face upon her return.  "If she doesn't punch him, she's afraid she'll kiss him," says Kay.  "They didn't split up on bad terms.  It wasn't that they weren't still in love with each other.  She just couldn't be around his family, and she didn't want her child to grow up around those people.

"My take is that she's still in love with him," she continues.  "There's no doubt about it.  But there's no way she's going to play on that.  She's a really smart woman, and she's not going to set herself up like that again.  There were a lot of lies that were told.  In her mind, it's just as well that they keep this distance and keep it just business.  But I think she loves being with him."

LOIS A MOB MOLL?

That said, with whom does Kay see Lois hooking up?  After all, from the looks of it, she could have her pick of guys.  "It's really fun!" the actress smiles.  "They're testing a lot of different chemistries.  She has no fear, and she's very strong.  I think it's probably a turn-on for some men when a woman is so open and speaks her mind."

Certainly, that seems to be the case with Alcazar, who through his obsession with Carly has proven to be a sucker for tough chicks.  Even Kay's mate, Keith Coulouris (ex-Keith, One Life to Live), has noticed.  "My husband calls him Shalomar," laughs Kay.  "She might have a thing for Shalomar.  But I think it's going to be a lust/hate thing.  She really despises what he stands for.  But when you're drawn to somebody, you're drawn to somebody."
