THE
HISTORY OF DUNN TOWNSHIP, self-published and written by Mabel Gracey Cowell first in 1957 and
rewritten in 1967, is filled with a wealth of information regarding Dunn Township and the pioneering families
and individuals that founded it, settled, and raised generations of families there.
Extensive history in the Booklet begins in the late 1700’s and ends with 1967.
The original is typewritten, single-spaced, consists of sixty-five pages, and thirty-one chapters.
The
Booklet was meticulously researched by the Author and is amazingly thorough in detail, with many family histories. The Townships of Byng and Port Maitland are also covered, and there is also
extensive history regarding the Schools and Churches of each of these Townships. Teachers
are listed from 1846 to 1967, Ministers from 1826 to 1967, and Reeves for the Township of Dunn from 1851 to 1966. A thorough history of The Women’s Institute, founded in 1897 by Adelaide Hunter-Hoodless
is included, as are extensive histories of Francis Ramsey, Reverend Arthur Johnson, and others, as well as
histories of The Historical Society and other important places and organizations.
