Thayer
Memorial Library Awarded Prestigious Federal Grant
The Thayer Memorial Library has won an important grant from the
federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the
Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) administered by the
Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
The Thayer Memorial Library has received a $2,500 federal
IMLS/LSTA grant to be used for a preservation planning survey to
identify specific goals and priorities for the long-term protection of
the Library’s special collections.
Upon learning that the Thayer Memorial Library received the
federal grant, Joseph Mulé, director of the Library,
remarked: This grant will provide the Board of Library Trustees
with a source of indispensable knowledge needed to preserving some of
Lancaster’s most precious treasures. Containing varied and unique
articles, which in some instances predate the construction of the
Library in 1868, the articles in the Constance V. R. Thayer Dexter
Special Collections (Special Collections) offer more than just a
glimpse of life in an era now past, but also actively support Lancaster
residents endeavoring to understand their place in the history of the
oldest Town in Worcester County.
The federal funds will be used to identify:
· potential hazards to materials
in the Special Collections
· actions required to insure the
long-term preservation of materials in the Special Collections
· steps necessary to achieve the
required preservation actions
Under federal legislation, the Institute of Museum and Library
Services, through the Library Services Act of 1996, provides funds to
State Libraries using a population-based formula. State libraries
may use the appropriation to support statewide initiatives and
services; they may also distribute the funds through sub grant
competitions or cooperative agreements to public, academic, research,
school and special libraries.
Federal funds support primarily activities using technology for
information sharing between libraries and other community
services. It also funds programs making library resources more
accessible to urban, rural or low income residents or others who have
difficulty using library services. For more information about
federal IMLS/LSTA grants, please visit the IMLS website at
www.imls.gov. Through Massachusetts’ state library agency, the
Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, these funds are used to
support goals and objects outlined in Massachusetts Long Range Plan
