Aaron Willard Tall Case Clock.
Federal
period-Heppelwhite style, ca. 1795-1805
Case made of mahogany,
mahogany veneer, and pine with painted dial inscribed "Aaron Willard,/
Boston." Originally owned by
Thomas Sanders (1759-1844), a pepper merchant who lived at 43 Chestnut Street,
Salem, Massachusetts. Molded bonnet top with
flanking curvaceous fretwork and three brass ball and steeple finials on short
fluted plinths, the center finial being larger. Reeded columns with brass
capitals and bases with stop fluting flank simple line inlay on arched panel
door with original glass. Molded waist with fluted
corner pilasters with brass stop fluting as above, with a brass hinged molded
door with conforming inlaid rectangular motif. Square base with concave
molding at top and convex molding above four ogee feet. Painted
dial is inscribed as above as has original surface with Roman and Arabic
numerals with pink rose and leaves corner spandrels with an oval polychrome
floral spray at the apex.
