Our elected officials in Washington are gambling with the lives of our children, the disabled, the elderly
and the working poor.
If enacted, cuts now proposed for food and nutrition programs will create a humanitarian crisis. Consider
that each month more than 1 million Pennsylvanians depend on the Food Stamp program. Statewide, the Women, Infants and Children
program serves more than 245,000 people. The Emergency Food Assistance Program fills the shelves of hundreds of emergency
pantries, and 60 percent of the households served by these volunteer-run agencies include a working adult. These programs
and others are funded through Agriculture Department authorizations, and every one is threatened.
Sens. Rick Santorum and Arlen Specter (R., Pa.) should do what is right and just for Pennsylvania and for
our nation - vote to scale back the tax cuts that benefit the wealthy and reject the proposed cuts in food, nutrition and
other domestic programs.
