In today's climate of polarized opinions, how refreshing that there is a topic so many can agree upon: environmentalism.
The March 22 article "Environment is uniting left and right" says voters normally on opposing sides of an
issue are joining in support of environmental causes. It's about time. While 61 percent of Americans say they are sympathetic
toward the environmental movement, many legislators pass bills that directly oppose the wishes of the majority of their constituents.
Starving Superfund revenues that clean up toxic waste sites and increasing noisy, polluting snowmobiles in Yellowstone National
Park are but two examples of recently legislated environmental black eyes.
We should challenge our elected officials to reflect the broad consensus of environmental interest. The
League of Conservation Voters gives Sen. Arlen Specter (R., Pa.) a rating of 28 percent and Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) zero
percent. We need to ask why they aren't reflecting the environmental consciousness.
