"A conservative government is an organized hypocrisy," future British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli said
in the mid-19th century. Perhaps he foresaw the pious frauds that are some of the extreme right wingers of the hijacked Republican
Party as they shed crocodile tears over Terri Schiavo.
The outrageous attempt by these congressmen, led by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R., Texas) and supported
by our region's own Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) and Rep. Chris Smith (R., N.J.), to override the many judicial decisions
supporting husband Michael Schiavo was a veiled attempt to gather votes.
Ironically, the so-called "culture of life" expounded by President Bush conveniently overlooks the millions
in America who are poverty stricken, or the millions who can't afford minimal health insurance, or the people who die each
year because of gun violence, or the thousands of deaths from the war in Iraq.
Let's encourage a written living will for all to avoid future displays of mock concern, but let's ensure a
living Constitution as well, safe from Bush and his congressional vultures.
