At hearings held at the Constitution Center this week, Pennsylvania's U.S. senators, Arlen Specter and Rick
Santorum, made a big show of being concerned about the tragic rise of youth violence. But they continue to oppose
attempts to stem the flood of guns into this community.
Owned lock, stock and barrel by the gun lobby, Specter and Santorum continue to oppose a common-sense proposal
to limit gun sales to one per person per month.
"The brutal fact of life," said Specter, "is that you are not going to take guns off the streets of American
cities - you are not going to take guns away from people in America."
Well, of course not. Advocates for the limit are not so naive as to believe guns can be eliminated from
our cities. They are not so stupid as to think they can "take guns away from people in America." We simply want to make it
somewhat more difficult for people to buy guns and then re-sell them on the street.
We are really tired of hearing people talk about the problem of youth violence and then do zip.
Message to our senators: Until you're ready to actually do something besides exploit tragedy, find some
other city for your photo ops.
