Quotes from the book and elsewhere, Santorum flip-flops over and over

Women & Work:
"Many women have told me, and surveys have shown, that they find it easier, more “professionally” gratifying, and certainly more socially affirming, to work outside the home than to give up their careers to take care of their children. Think about that for a moment…Here, we can thank the influence of radical feminism, one of the core philosophies of the village elders."  p.95

"When I was elected to the Senate, I didn't just want to make it possible for poor women to work;   I wanted to give them a job. So I hired eight welfare recipients to work in my office."  Sep 1, 2004

"A parent should stay home. I didn't say whether it should be moms or dads. I have a lot of friends where the mom works and the dad stays home. I'm very flexible on that, ... clearly I'm an advocate for families and staying home with your kids, but I'm very specific about not saying which [parent] should and which shouldn't [stay home]. I'm saying women should have more choices not to be forced to work to have social affirmation."  Jul 7, 2004

"In far too many families with young children, both parents are working, when, if they really took an honest look at the budget, they might confess that both of them really don’t need to, or at least may not need to work as much as they do… And for some parents, the purported need to provide things for their children simply provides a convenient rationalization for pursuing a gratifying career outside the home." Pg. 94  It Takes a Family

Santorum says he does not want his home-state voters to think he feels impoverished on his $162,100 Senate salary, but it is clear that money is a concern and that he is almost certainly one of the least well-off among the 100 senators.  ''We live paycheck to paycheck, absolutely,'' he says. Does he have money set aside for college? ''No. None. I always tell my kids: 'Work hard. We'll take out loans. Whatever.' '' He volunteers that his parents help out financially. ''They're by no means wealthy ... but they'll send a check every now and then. They realize things are a little tighter for us.''  NYTimes Magazine, May 22, 2005

Abortion:
"But unlike abortion today, in most states even the slaveholder did not have the unlimited right to kill his slave."  p. 241

Karen Garver Santorum had an ectopic pregnancy 8 months after their daughter Elizabeth.  (p. 17 Letters to Gabriel)  There are two recommended treatments for ectopic pregnancy, either termination of the pregnancy using drugs or surgery.  It is likely that apart from the miscarriage of their son Gabriel, she had an abortion of a prior pregnancy.  This is consistent with tolerating abortion to save the life of the mother, a view Santorum claims to hold.  He compares it to 'murder' in self-defense.  Terri Gross interview  Aug 30, 2004

"Another corporate good citizen cooperating with parents to keep kids from inappropriate content has been Wal-Mart." p. 332

Multiculturalism:
"The elementary error of relativism becomes clear when we look at multiculturalism. Sometime in the 1980s, universities began to champion the importance of “diversity” as a central educational value." p. 406 Excerpts on Capitolbuzz website  Jul 5, 2005  Amazon reviews
