Basilikoi Anthropopoi

The Emperor's Men

The "Emperor's Men" are the elite of the entire Roman armed forces, in more ways than one. They are recruited from the ranks of the Tagmata, and only accept volunteers who have more than three years of experience. Candidates must pass a strenuous battery of intellectual, physical, and basic military tests before being accepted into one of the courses for the different subunits of the Basilikoi.

No points values are given for Basilikoi Anthropopoi since their use should ALWAYS be scenario defined. If a Special Forces operation is executed properly, it does not give their opponents a fighting chance and hence does not make a very fun war game. These units are included in the interests of completeness and interest.

Spatharioi

These soldiers are all officers who have attended the Advanced Military Studies courses of the Imperial War College. They are trained to be the operational and strategic geniuses who are needed to command large formations and serve as Operations Officers and Chiefs of Staff on Divisional and higher staffs. The courses focus on information management, and maneuver warfare as the ideal. The motto of the AMS course is "To win without fighting is the acme of skill" and the Spatharioi take it to heart. This obsession with minimum cost in victory and use of maneuver to avoid head-long slogging matches adds to the Roman reputation for deviousness which is the pride of their entire armed forces.

Spatharioi are found on the staffs of various Tagmatic and even some Thematic units and command Tagmatic units of Regimental size and larger. Their only distinction in uniform is the Forest Green piping on their dress uniforms. They also make up the officer and warrant officer contingent of the Imperial General Staff and of the headquarters of Imperial field armies.

Stratores

The Stratores Division is organized as a largely conventional force with an emphasis on raiding and ambushes. They are trained to insert either orbitally or in an atmospheric parachute drop, destroy their objective, and move rapidly to an exfiltration point. They are not intended to engage in long-term slugging matches with conventional enemy forces. The 4 regiments making up the Division are always deployed separately, and often split into independent battalions subordinate to a conventional corps or army. A force as small as a platoon or as large as a regiment may be used for any mission.

Stratores units are always elite.

Spatharokanditatoi

Spatharokanditatoi are organized and trained to be Imperial liaisons with a variety of groups. They can train allied troops, coordinate with allied or mercenary forces during combined operations, and organize guerillas in enemy territory. The Empire is very vague about exactly how many Regiments of Spatharokanditatoi there are. The following groups and their areas of specialization have been identified.

Experienced Spatharokanditatoi officers who have also been to the AMS course also form the SOCCE, or Special Operations Command and Control Element. The New Roman Basilikoi Anthropopoi have a lot fewer institutional enemies than most Special Operations units, but the possibility will always exist. And while the AMS course does include classes on how to employ special operations forces, this is not the same as having operational experience. The SOCCE acts as a staff to the conventional commander who has SF units under his command (usually a Corps commander). They make sure the commander understands the capabilities and limitations of Special Operations units and make sure their guys don't become endangered due to mishandling of them or improper support.

The student of mathematics will notice that the 3rd, 7th, 9th, and 10th Regiments are missing from this listing. There is evidence that at least the 3rd does exist, details are unavailable on it's assignments. It is rumored the 9th is seconded to the Master of Offices for 'super squirrel' black work.
A Spatharokanditatoi regiment is made up of from 3 to 7 battalions, each of 3-4 companies. Each Company consists of 4 Teams and a command team (including support staff).
Each Team is made up of 12 soldiers

Armament of these teams is usually either the standard Roman weapons, the Mk 7 Gauss Rifle and the SAW version thereof, or enemy weapons. Since it is difficult to cut down a Gauss weapon without sacrificing velocity, the standard rifles are used. Spatharokanditatoi usually wear either no armor or partial body armor, and again they tend to wear the armor of either their enemy or the allies they are working with. The exact weapons mix is up to the members of the team and the Team Commander for each mission.

Kandidatoi

Kandidatoi focus on reconnaissance of a strategic and operational nature. They are inserted before any major operation to survey landing and drop zones, to identify communications and other assets for later destruction, and to designate for precision munitions in the initial attack. The teams are 4-man elements including a Team Leader, a Medic, A Communications Specialist, and Weapons Specialist. Kandidatoi teams can be inserted via orbital or parachute drop, and move on foot, by acquiring local transportation, or on a ruggedized Land Rover (see other pages for DSII/SGII stats). 4 Teams comprise a platoon with a small headquarters element, and 4 platoons make up a company. Each company contains enough integral support assets to deploy in support of an operation, although it is preferred to deploy a battalion (4 companies) if possible. The following battalions are known to exist:

The latter three are formations comprised of refugees and defectors from the Islamic Federation. These troops are considered highly reliable and are quite anxious to prove their loyalty to their new homeland. Most of them come from persecuted minorities, either ethnic or religious.

Kandidatoi teams are always elite. They do not wear body armor, and carry the same weapons as Spatharokanditatoi teams.

Mandatores

The Mandatores provide the support that gets the other Basilikoi Anthropopoi to their destinations. They fly the spacecraft, shuttles, aircraft, and VTOLs needed to insert teams where ever when ever, and do so without attracting any undue attention. Unlike the above units, many Mandatores personnel are drawn from the Imperial Navy.

Sacred class Special Forces Support Ship
Displacement: 5400 tonnes (Mass factor 54)
Hull Type: Fragile (Hull Integrity 5)
Crew: 9 officer, 45 ratings (Crew Factor 3)
Sensors: Standard sensors, 1xFire Control
Defenses: 1xPDS,
Other Systems: Cloaking Device
Drive Systems: Main Drive rating 8, FTL Drive
Procurement cost: 1710 Million Noumisma
The Sacred class is not intended to drop large forces, but to quietly insert small units prior to an actual planetary assault. It includes space for two 8-mass modules:

Note that Troop space is costed at 1 point per space, Drop Capsules cost 1.5 points. Landers cost twice as much as normal for stealth versions. Note that a Sacred class ship can enter the atmosphere stealthed and drop the Special Operations teams via modified drop capsules without requiring powered armor, although HAHO or HALO operations do require life support equipment which is encumbering on the ground and is usually disposed of with the parachutes. The Sacred class ship is named in honor of the Sacred Squadron, a Greek SAS formation raised during World War II, in the Early Atomic Era.

The Mandatores also operate versions of the standard Army helicopters.

Mandatores will rarely be seen on a Stargrunt battlefield. If by chance one should wish to do a scenario with the rescue of a downed Mandatores aircraft as a scenario, the crews will count as veterans, armed with the standard Imperial SMG, the Mk3 'Antioch' Sub-machine gun, firing the a 7.6mm ETC cartridge. FP3, Impact d8, close range band only.
