The Varangians

The Axe-Bearing Guard

 

The Varangian Guard is recruited from Scandinavian Federation and Free Ukrainian personnel under an agreement with the Scandinavian government. Officers are required to speak Greek, but the internal language of the Regiment is Svensk. Their dress uniform is distinctive, being scarlet rather than the white of the rest of the Army, and includes battle axes in both the dress and field variants.  The primary role of the Varangians is as palace guards, and 1-2 battalions are always on this duty on a rotating basis.  The remaining 3-4 act as assault troops for the Tagmatic Corps, with a primary emphasis on seizing starports as a spacehead for a more conventional force.

Varangians are usually only deployed in Battalion strength. Combat elements of the entire regiment can be dropped from orbit, with support units following in landers. Requires orbital and aerospace support to deal with any heavy opposition. Varangian elements are almost always Elite. d10: 1-2:Veteran, 3+ Elite. +1 if rebellion or war is ongoing, +2 if already survived one orbital insertion under fire.

Headquarters squads are administrative only, and break down to fight as individuals. Weapons teams may be employed separately or in the squad. Varangians have also made a near-fetish of carrying their ceremonial axes into combat with them. In that case, they count as causing terror and receive a +1 shift in close combat.
