The Dismounted Platoon

At the Sharp and Pointy End

"Americans in 1950 rediscovered something that since Hiroshima they had forgotten: you may fly over a land forever; you may bomb it, atomize it, pulverize it and wipe it clean of life - but if you desire to defend it, protect it, and keep it for civilization, you must do this on the ground, the way the Roman legions did, by putting your young men into the mud."
--T. R. Fehrenbach "This Kind of War"

Stargrunt is the best damn science fiction skirmish game on the market.  Written by Jon Tuffley, and available from Ground Zero Games, it incorporates every aspect needed to properly depict small-unit actions in the near future.

Theta Series Modified TOE

In 2177, a commission was appointed to report to the Emperor on the lessons learned from the Romanov War. It was informally referred to as the Marionides Commission after the chairman, the commander of the Excubitii during the invasion of New Sofia. One of the most controversial recommendations of that panel, composed of 2/3 general officers and 1/3 Sergeants Major, was for a complete revision of the organization of most dismounted units in the NRE Army. Another reform was the institution of the Selected Marksman Program. The operations on New Sofia highlighted the need for long-range precision fire capabilities in all platoons. While less rigorous than the Sniper School and with less intensive coverage of fieldcraft and site selection, this program created a basic counter-sniper capability in every NRE platoon. The idea was less to provide fully trained snipers than to have a reaction to harassment fire from amateur sniper such as are encountered in peacekeeping and counter-guerilla operations.

By 2179, every affected branch school had weighed in and a furious debate had raged in the various professional periodicals and 'Net forums. The majority of the proposed changes were finally authorized in late 2179 and the first brigades began reorganizing their units in February 2180. Hence the unofficial practice of referring to this organization as the "2180 pattern". Officially, this was the Theta organization, being the 8th reorganization of the infantry platoon since 2100, when this tracking system was instituted.

Equipment will be referred to by NRE nomenclature. Each TO&E is followed by a discussion. Equipment is at the end.

PL: Platoon Leader
PSG: Platoon Sergeant
EW: Electronic Warfare Technician
SL: Squad Leader
TL: Team Leader
AR: Automatic Rifleman
SAW: Squad Automatic Weapon Gunner
AA: Anti-Armor Rifleman
AG: Assistant Gunner
TC: Track Commander (Generically, any vehicle commander)
GPMG: General Purpose Machine Gunner
CI: Counter-intelligence agent
CI NCO: Counter-intelligence Non-commissioned Officer
x/x: Officers/Enlisted.

In case anyone cares, the NRE term for platoon is Allaghion.

Theta Type 1: Tagmatic Skutatoi (1/31)

Platoon HQ Squad: PL, PSG, EW, Medic, Marksman (1/4)
2xLine Squads: SL, TL, 2xAR, 2xSAW, 2xAA (0/8)
Weapons Squad: 2xAT Gunner (Senior Gunner is Squad Leader), 2xAG (0/4)
Vehicle Squad: 3xTC (Senior TC is Squad Leader), 4xDrivers (0/7)

PL, SL, TL, AR: Klibanion Powered Armor, Mk7P
Powered Armor Automatic Rifle
EW: Klibanion Powered Armor, Mk7P, Superior EW Suite
Medic: Klibanion, Mk3P Powered Armor Submachine Gun
Marksman: Klibanion, Mk 24P Gauss Sniper Rifle
SAW: Klibanion, Mk8P Gauss SAW
AA: Klibanion, Mk7P, 2xIAVR
AT Gunner: Klibanion, Pit Bull/P Light Guided Missile Launcher, Mk7P
AG: Klibanion, Mk7P, 3xPit Bull Light Guided Missiles
PSG, TC, Driver: Combat Vehicular Crewman Suit, Mk3 Submachine Gun

Major End Items:
4xConstantine I IFV
24xKlibanion Powered Armor Suits
2xPit Bull/P GMS/L Launchers
1xEW Suite
4xMk8P SAW
18xMk7P Rifles
9xMk3/Mk3P SMG
1xMk 24P Gauss Sniper Rifle
8xCombat Vehicle Crewman Suits

Notes on Tactical Employment: This unit is designed to fight with it's vehicles only. While the PSG commands the vehicles, the PL dismounts to lead the squads. The anti-armor teams may be divided up and added to the line squads, or may be kept together as a reserve. The HQ Squad is for administrative purposes only, elements thereof will either function as individual figures or be attached to a line squad. The loss of the third squad is theoretically made up for in the large size of the other two, and the fact that the IFVs provide much of the base of fire to allow the two squads to maneuver.

Designer's Notes: Not much to say--I'm limited here by the carrying capacity of a size 3 vehicle, and the number of specialists I wish to put in each platoon (anti-armor teams, marksmen, etc). The firepower of each of these squads is a bit much (2xd10, 1xd12, quality dice, usually d8 or d10). If your house rules permit, I'd suggest splitting fire between the two actions your squad gets. This allows d10, d8, and unit quality. And you have the ability to absorb some serious losses--three riflemen have to go down to drop the firepower die at all--but then it's a d8 and gets worse rapidly. Haven't actually used this TO&E yet, since my Tagmatic troops rarely get broken out.

Theta Type 2: Varangian Guard Platoon (1/33)

Platoon HQ Squad: PL, PSG, EW, Medic, Marksman (1/4)
3xRifle Squads: SL, TL, 2xAR, 2xSAW, 2xAA (0/8)
Weapons Squad: SL, 2xAT Gunners, 2xAG (0/5)

PL, PSG, SL, TL, AR: Klibanion Powered Armor, Mk7P Powered Armor Automatic Rifle
EW: Klibanion Powered Armor, Mk7P, Superior EW Suite
Medic: Klibanion, Mk3P Powered Armor Submachine Gun
Marksman: Klibanion, Mk 24P Gauss Sniper Rifle
SAW: Klibanion, Mk8P Gauss SAW
AA: Klibanion, Mk7P, 2xIAVR
AT Gunner: Klibanion, Pit Bull/P Light Guided Missile Launcher, Mk7P
AG: Klibanion, Mk7P, 3xPit Bull Light Guided Missiles

Major End Items:
34xKlibanion Powered Armor Suits
2xPit Bull/P GMS/L Launchers
1xEW Suite
6xMk8 SAW
26xMk7P Rifles
1xMk3P SMG
1xMk 24P Gauss Sniper Rifle

Notes on Tactical Employment: Varangian platoons are always elite. As above, headquarters squads are administrative only, and break down to fight as individuals. Weapons teams may be employed separately or in the squad.

Designer's Notes: Nothing much to say. No weaknesses. Excellent troops with the best equipment money can buy.

Theta Type 3: Thematic Skutatoi (1/39)

Platoon HQ Squad: PL, PSG, EW, Medic, Marksman (1/5)
3xLine Squads: SL, TL, 2xAR, 2xSAW, 2xAA (0/8)
Weapons Squad: 2xAT Gunner (Senior Gunner is Squad Leader), 2xAG (0/4)
Vehicle Squad: 3xTC (Senior TC is Squad Leader), 4xDrivers (0/7)

PL, SL, TL, AR: Combat Armor, Mk7 Automatic Rifle
EW: Combat Armor, Mk7, Superior EW Suite
Medic: Combat Armor, Mk3 Submachine Gun
Marksman: Combat Armor, Mk 24 Gauss Sniper Rifle
SAW: Combat Armor, Mk8 Gauss SAW
AA: Combat Armor, Mk7, 2xIAVR
AT Gunner: Combat Armor, Pit Bull Light Guided Missile Launcher, Mk3 SMG
AG: Combat Armor, Mk7, 3xPit Bull Light Guided Missiles
PSG, TC, Driver: Combat Vehicular Crewman Suit, Mk3 Submachine Gun

Major End Items:
4xMichael Comnenus IFV
32xCombat Armor Suits
2xPit Bull GMS/L Launchers
1xEW Suite
6xMk8 SAW
22xMk7 Rifles
12xMk3 SMG
1xMk 24 Gauss Sniper Rifle

Tactical Employment: Again, this TO&E is not intended to fight without it's vehicles.

Designer's Notes: Again I'm limited in the number of heavy weapons attached by the carrying capacity of the IFVs. Firepower of the squads is the same as their Tagmatic counterparts, but the third squad is a dramatic increase in platoon firepower. Of course, they are also a lot less survivable than powered armor troops, and slower as well.

Theta Type 4: Thematic Light Infantry (1/33)

Platoon HQ Squad: PL, PSG, EW, Medic, AR, Marksman (1/5)
3xLine Squads: SL, TL, 2xAR, 2xSAW, 2xAA (0/8)
Weapons Squad: SL, 3xSAW (0/4)

PL, PSG, SL, TL, AR: Ballistic Vest, Mk7 Automatic Rifle
EW: Ballistic Vest, Mk7, Superior EW Suite
Medic: Ballistic Vest, Mk3 Submachine Gun
Marksman: Ballistic Vest, Mk 24 Gauss Sniper Rifle
SAW: Ballistic Vest, Mk8 Gauss SAW
AA: Ballistic Vest, Mk7, 2xIAVR

Major End Items:
34xBallistic Vests
1xEW Suite
9xMk8 SAW
23xMk7 Rifles
1xMk3 SMG
1xMk 24 Gauss Sniper Rifle

Notes on Tactical Employment: The anti-armor teams may be divided up and added to the line squads, or may be kept together as a reserve. The HQ Squad is for administrative purposes only, elements thereof will either function as individual figures or be attached to a line squad. The exception is the AR, who forms a squad with the medic. This individual is a trained Combat Lifesaver (as is one rifleman per squad in all NRE units) who assists the medic and guards him. Medic is the "squad leader" for game purposes. This unit would likely be reinforced with a GMS/L Team from the company Anti-armor squad. NRE Light Infantry is not intended to face armored units on open terrain, and for close fighting is generally issued with additional IAVRs, usually 1 per AR.

Theta Type 5: Military Police (1/34)
Headquarters Section: Platoon Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Medic, EW Tech, 2xDrivers, 2xJeeps
Maintenance Section: 2xMechanics, Contact Truck
3xLine Squads
HQ Team: Jeep, Squad Leader, Driver, Gunner
2xMP Teams: Jeep, Team Leader, Driver, Gunner

Platoon Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Driver, Squad Leader, Team Leader: Combat Armor, Mk7 Automatic Rifle, Mk9 Automatic Pistol
Mechanics: Ballistic Vest, Mk7 Automatic Rifle
Medic: Combat Armor, Mk3 SMG
EW Tech: Combat Armor, Mk7 Automatic Rifle, Superior EW Suite
Gunner: Combat Armor, Mk7 Automatic Rifle, Mk9 Automatic Pistol, Mk8 Gauss SAW

Major End Items
12xJeeps
33xCombat Armor Suits
1xEW Suite
9xMk8 SAW
34xMk7 Rifles
1xMk3 SMG
32xMk9 Automatic Pistol
2xBallistic Vests

Notes on tactical employment: MP units are designed for independent operation, with the platoon being far more self-sufficient than any other type of platoon. Often single squads will be found working traffic control points, or guarding some rear echelon facility. Each jeep is armed with a Gauss SAW in addition to the one carried by the gunner for dismounted work. MP units are heavily over armed in order to fulfill their role in the retrograde of rear guard. In this case, they frequently carry as many as a half-dozen IAVRs per vehicle.

Theta Type 6: Militia (1/35)
Platoon HQ Squad: PL, PSG, Medic, AR, Marksman (1/5)
3xLine Squads: SL, TL, 2xAR, 2xSAW, 2xAA (0/8)
Weapons Squad: SL, 3xGPMG, 3xAG (0/7)

PL, PSG, SL, TL, AR, AG: Ballistic Vest, Mk2 Automatic Rifle
Medic: Ballistic Vest, Mk3 Submachine Gun
Marksman: Ballistic Vest, Mk 12 Sniper Rifle
SAW: Ballistic Vest, Mk5 SAW
AA: Ballistic Vest, Mk2, 1xIAVR

Major End Items:
36xBallistic Vests
6xMk5 SAW
3xMk6 GPMG
25xMk2 Rifles
1xMk3 SMG
1xMk 12 Sniper Rifle

Notes on Tactical Employment: The anti-armor teams may be divided up and added to the line squads, or may be kept together as a reserve. The HQ Squad is for administrative purposes only, elements thereof will either function as individual figures or be attached to a line squad. The exception is the AR, who forms a squad with the medic. This individual is a trained Combat Lifesaver (as is one rifleman per squad in all NRE units) who assists the medic and guards him. Medic is the "squad leader" for game purposes.

Designer's Notes: What can you say about militia? They aren't intended to really outfight regular troops, just fend off bandits. By the way, most militia officers are former Regular NCOs and officers, so while troop quality may not be there, leadership frequently is.

Theta Type 7&8 Tagmatic and Thematic Battalion Scout Platoons: (1/29)

Headquarters Section: (1/5)

2xScout Sections: (0/12)

PL, PSG, SL, Bike Riders, Drivers: Ballistic Vest, Mk7 Automatic Rifle
EW: Ballistic Vest, Mk7, Superior EW Suite
SAW: Ballistic Vest, Mk8 Gauss SAW

Major End Items:
30xBallistic Vests
6xEW Suite
6xMk8 SAW
24xMk7 Rifles
6xJeeps
8xBikes

Notes on Employment: These two formations are almost identical except for vehicles employed. In a Tagmatic unit, the Scout Vehicles are Grav Jeeps, whereas in a Thematic unit they are HiMob Wheeled Jeeps. Likewise, a Tagmatic unit has grav bikes, where a Thematic unit uses HiMob Wheeled bikes. Each squad has a jeep and two bikes, plus the platoon leader has a jeep. The Platoon Sergeant has a cargo jeep with trailer for logistical resupply. Usually, each targeted area is scouted by a scout squad, but the bike can split off to keep one target under observation while the jeep moves to another area.

Theta Type 9: Thematic Light Infantry Reconnaissance Platoon (1/23)

Platoon HQ: PL, EW, PSG (1/2)
3xReconaissance Squads: SL, EW, 2xAR, SAW (0/5)
3xSniper Teams: Sniper, Spotter (0/2)

PL, PSG, SL, AR: Ballistic Vest, Mk7 Rifle
EW: Ballistic Vest, Mk7 Rifle, Superior EW Suite
Sniper: Mk24 Gauss Sniper Rifle
Spotter: Mk7 Rifle

Tactical Employment Notes: Rarely seen together in one place. The Light Infantry Recon Platoon does not perform the screen mission, and as such almost never concentrates in one area. Sniper Teams are almost always encountered alone.

Theta 10: Tagmatic Combat Engineer Platoon (1/28)

Platoon HQ Squad: PL, PSG, Medic, 2xDrivers (1/4)
3xLine Squads: SL, TL, 2xSappers, 2xSAW, TC, Driver (0/8)

PL, PSG, SL, TL, Sappers: Klibanion Powered Armor, Mk7P Powered Armor Automatic Rifle
Medic: Klibanion, Mk3P Powered Armor Submachine Gun
SAW: Klibanion, Mk8P Gauss SAW
TC, Drivers: Combat Vehicular Crewman Suit, Mk3 Submachine Gun

Major End Items:
4xConstantine I IFV
1xGrav Jeep
20xKlibanion Powered Armor Suits
6xMk8P SAW
14xMk7P Rifles
11xMk3/Mk3P SMG
8xCombat Vehicle Crewman Suits

Employment Notes: The Platoon Sergeant's vehicle is a jeep modified to accept a powered armor passenger. The Platoon Leader is the TC of his IFV and that also requires some heavy internal modification. The medic rides in the PL's IFV.

Theta Type 11: Thematic Combat Engineer Platoon (1/34)

Platoon HQ Squad: PL, PSG, Medic, 2xDrivers (1/4)
3xLine Squads: SL, TL, 4xSappers, 2xSAW, TC, Driver (0/10)

PL, SL, TL, Sapper, PSG, PSG's Driver: Combat Armor, Mk7 Automatic Rifle
EW: Combat Armor, Mk7, Superior EW Suite
Medic: Combat Armor, Mk3 Submachine Gun
SAW: Combat Armor, Mk8 Gauss SAW
TC, Driver: Combat Vehicular Crewman Suit, Mk3 Submachine Gun

Major End Items:
4xMichael Comnenus IFV
1xJeep
29xCombat Armor Suits
6xMk8 SAW
21xMk7 Rifles
8xMk3 SMG

Employment Notes: The Platoon Sergeant's vehicle is a jeep. Both he and his driver wear Combat Armor and carry rifles. The Platoon Leader is the TC of his IFV and that requires some minor internal modification, as he wears combat armor also. The medic rides in the PL's IFV.

Theta Type 12: Stratores Platoon

Platoon HQ Squad: PL, PSG, EW, Medic (1/3)
3xRifle Squads: SL, 2xTL, 3xAR, 1xMarksman, 2xSAW (0/9)
Weapons Squad: SL, 1xAT Gunners, 1xAG, 3xSAW (0/6)

PL, PSG, SL, TL, AR: Klibanion Powered Armor, Mk7P Powered Armor Automatic Rifle
EW: Klibanion Powered Armor, Mk7P, Superior EW Suite
Medic: Klibanion, Mk3P Powered Armor Submachine Gun
SAW: Klibanion, Mk8P Gauss SAW
AT Gunner: Klibanion, Pit Bull/P Light Guided Missile Launcher, Mk7P
AG: Klibanion, Mk7P, 3xPit Bull Light Guided Missiles
Marksman: Klibanion, Mk24 Gauss Sniper Rifle

Major End Items:
37xKlibanion Powered Armor Suits
1xPit Bull/P GMS/L Launcher
1xSuperior EW Suite
9xMk8 SAW
27xMk7P Rifles
1xMk3P SMG

Notes on Employment: The Stratores Division is part of the Basilikoi Anthropopoi, the New Roman Special Operations Command (Literally, Emperor's Men, a term which includes both special operations forces and the General Staff equivalent). They operate as a raiding force and are not intended for long term combat operations.

Theta Type 13: Kandidatoi

Platoon Headquarters: Platoon Commander, Executive Officer, Platoon Sergeant, Communications/EW Specialist
4xPatrols: Team Leader, Medic, Commo/EW Specialist, Weapons Specialist.

Notes on Tactical Employment: The Kandidatoi are part of the Basilikoi Anthropopoi, the New Roman Special Operations Command (Literally, Emperor's Men, a term which includes both special operations forces and the General Staff equivalent). They operate primarily as long range and special reconnaissance forces. Typical armament is 3xMk7 and either a Mk24 or a M8, however equivalent enemy weapons are frequently carried instead.

Theta Type 14: Spatharokanditatoi

There are no Spatharokanditatoi platoons. A company is composed of 4 teams and a command team. Spatharokanditatoi teams have 12 men and are permitted to equip in accordance with mission needs.

Theta Type 15: Akritai Light Mechanized Platoon (1/39)

Platoon HQ Squad: PL, PSG, EW, Medic, Marksman (1/5)
3xLine Squads: SL, TL, 2xAR, 2xSAW, 2xAA (0/8)
Weapons Squad: 1xAT Gunner, 1xAG, 1xGPMG, 1xAG (0/4)
Vehicle Squad: 3xTC (Senior TC is Squad Leader), 4xDrivers (0/7)

PL, SL, TL, AR: Ballistic Vest, Mk4 Automatic Rifle, Mk9 Pistol
EW: Ballistic Vest, Mk4, Enhanced EW Suite, Mk9 Pistol

AT AG: Ballistic Vest, Mk4, 3xPit Bull Light Guided Missiles, Mk9 Pistol
GPMG AG: Ballistic Vest, Mk4, Spare GPMG Barrel and extra ammo, Mk9 Pistol
PSG, TC, Driver: Combat Vehicular Crewman Suit, Mk3 Submachine Gun, Mk9 Pistol

Major End Items:
4xTheophilus LPC
32xCombat Armor Suits
1xPit Bull GMS/L Launchers
1xEW Suite
6xMk5 SAW
1xMk6 GPMG
23xMk4 Rifles
10xMk3 SMG
1xMk 12 Sniper Rifle
40xMk9 Pistols

Notes on Tactical Employment: While the PSG commands the vehicles, the PL dismounts to lead the squads. The HQ Squad is for administrative purposes only, elements thereof will either function as individual figures or be attached to a line squad. These guys are supposed to be both border guards and screen the frontiers long enough for the regulars to get out of their motor pools. The pistols are for situations dealing with civilians--there are times when turning machine guns on civilians is appropriate, but not often.

Theta Type 16 and 17 Turma Trapezitoi Platoon (Brigade Reconnaissance [Lit. Light Cavalry] Platoon) (1/31)

Major End Items:
2xLight Tanks
4xCavalry Fighting Vehicles
1xJeep
18xBallistic Vests
4xEW Suites
17xMk7 Rifles
13xMk3 SMG
12xCVC Suits

Tactical Employment Notes: The entire HQ Squad except the PSG and his driver operate out of the PL's CFV. The difference between the Tagmatic and Thematic versions of the TO&E are only in the vehicles used. Tagmatic platoons use Leo the Great Light Tanks, Leo III CFVs, and Grav Jeeps. Thematic platoons use Constantine V Light, Leo V CFV, and wheeled Jeeps.
