The Tagmata

Mailed Fist of the Empire

 

The Tagmata generally operates in Division Task Forces.  These are heavy divisions augmented by light airmobile infantry, by additional construction engineering assets, and other specialized wartime troops.  Most of these assets are either Thematic (in the case of combat arms) or drawn from the Corps Support Command.

Ammunition costs for artillery are not included.  Points costs for engineering equipment is also not included.  Further, only a selected number of support assets are detailed.

Regimental artillery batteries are identical to those that are part of the Divisional Trapezitoi Squadrons, except that all 6 fire support teams are COLTs.  A word on artillery doctrine is appropriate here.  Each maneuver regiment is assigned a single battalion of field artillery from the divisional artillery regiment.  Each maneuver battalion is then habitually assigned one artillery battery from that battalion.  The Fire Support Teams from that battery are assigned to the maneuver companies.  The two COLTs are assigned as the battalion commander desires, typically with the scouts or with supporting assets assigned to augment the battalion task force.  The Regimental battery is controlled by the Regimental commander, either remaining in general support, firing regiment-directed missions against targets deeper in the Regimental sector, or being assigned to support the main effort. 

Kataphract Division detailed, Skutatoi Divisions differ only in having 2 Skutatoi Regiments and 1 Kataphract Regiment.

Tagmatic Corps

The fighting divisions of the Tagmatic Corps are the Scholae, Excubitii, the Vigla, and Ikanatoi. The Vigla in peacetime contains one MP Regiment. During wartime, the Middle Hetaereia replace the MP Regiment, which moves to Corps command. The Great Hetaereia form the Corps Independent Kataphract Regiment, and the three Skythakoi Regiments scout for the Corps. All other Corps assets are drawn from the Nea Optimaton Theme.
