Key:
Ref# - a cross reference number
used by
the compiler. It has little meaning with the exception that
entries with the same Ref# were found listed close to one another on
the census. Assuming
the county was not alphabetized, and some were, this can be especially
helpful
in locating neighbors.
NF - stands for "not found".
This
means an original copy of the entry was not located (yet) for
verification; the information given for that entry comes from an index.
WM>16 - White males over 16 years
of
age, including the head of household.
WM<16 - White males under 16 years
of
age.
WF - White females, including the head
of
household.
OFW - Other free whites.
S - Slaves owned. This number
does
not seem too trustworthy. Often the index would list "0" but the
actual
entry would not include a column for this item, much less a number.
Misc. - Miscellaneous
About this extraction:
This extraction was taken from three main
sources:
Microfilmed copies of the National Archives population schedules of the
1790
census, The Accelerated Index (up to 1810), and an index complied by
AHI
for the 1790 census.
All surnames listed by Head of Household.
In
other words, there could be others living in the household with a
different surname, but the eldest male is a "Logan", unless a minor,
then the eldest female.
There are some unlikely "Logans" (i.e.:
Logue, Log, Logmore, Logsdon...) but I included them because of the
presence of other
"Logans" in that county, thinking it could be a mistake. You will
need
to check it out for yourself.
Entries taken from the tax rolls (VA, KY,
NJ, DE) should be noted that this is only the tax entries for the
calendar year
1790. Many other tax entries for the years previous and post 1790
are
available, and can be very helpful for any state research.
