[The Will of]
George Logan
Carolina
In the name of God Amen I George Logan of Berkley
County in the Province Aforesaid Esq: Being in perfect health of body
and of sound-mind memory thanks to Almighty God first ---- make Ordain
Publish and Declare, These present to be and contain my last will and
testament: hereby revoking and making null and void all former and
other wills and testaments: by me heretofore made, first and
principally I recommend my Soul to Almighty God my creator assuredly
believing that I shall receive full pardon and remission of all my sins
and be saved by the precious death and merits of my blessed Savior and
redeemer Christ Jesus and my body to the earth from whence it came to
be buried in such decent (but not profuse) manner, as to my Exors
Executrix and Exer here thereafter named shall be thought meet and
convenient and as touching such worldly estates as the Lord in
His mercy has been pleased to bestow upon me, my will desire, intent
and meaning is, the same shall be employed and bestowed, as hereafter,
by this my will is expressed.
Item 2: My will, desire and meaning is that all debts due to me here
and in all other parts of the world --- whosoever as also the -------
proceeds arising from the labor of the slaves on the plantation on
Thomas's Island where I now reside, and the slaves on the
plantation commonly called and known by the name of Weeahoe where my
son George resides and has the management: thereof shall be
appropriated and I do appropriate the same for the paying and
discharging my just debts and that m-legacies hereafter by me given or
division of any part of my estate made, shall be performed or executed
until my said debts be first satisfied and paid as above
Item 3: my will and desire also is that both mine and my wife's
children be and I do hereby order, them there maintenance out of the
produce from the labor of the slaves of both the plantations before
mentioned until the debts be fully paid and satisfied, but in case any
of them should be desirous of having their legacies hereafter by
me given, that them (and no otherwise) their legacies shall be obliged
and I do hereby oblige them and every of them to pay out of their said
legacies a proportional part of the my said debts, that shall be then
due and owing as shall be computed by my Executrix and Exor hereafter
named.
Item 4: I give and bequeath unto my dear and well beloved wife Martha
Logan nineteen slaves (after my just debts are fully paid and
discharged as above) by name George, Whau, Jupiter, Hopping Jack,
Jeffery, Cyrus, P------,Blackwall, Mercury, Quase, Fortune, James,
Adam, Flora, India, Phillis, Amye, Pomiller, Ameratt and Betty with
their increase I also give and bequeath unto my said loving wife
all the household goods, as bedding, brass, pewter, iron, linen
and ----ing of what kind soever, with the plate and jewels that were
actually and bonafida her's before my marriage with her. I
likewise give and bequeath unto her my said wife all the stock with
their increase on the plantation where I now reside that is to my
meat cattle, horses mares and hogs I also give unto my said wife,
seventy eight feet of front land on the bay adjoining to the northward
on land, belonging to Maj. William Blakeway and three lots in Charles
Town known by their numbers ---------------, also two lots at Beafort
Town and known by the numbers --------- all with bequeathed premises I
give to her and her heirs for ever all wise provided, and it is the
true intent and meaning of this my last will and testament: that is
what is herein by me given to my said well beloved wife is and shall be
in full law of all pretensions or pretentions to her thirds or dower
that she may claim to my said estate or any part thereof by any law,
custom, usage or means whatsoever.
Item 5: I give and devise and bequeath unto my son George Logan twenty
slaves (after my debts are paid as before provided) by name Duke,
Primus, Aberdeen, London, -------, Prince, Jack, Will, Tom, Adam,
Cuffee, with three last (the last 3) I bought of Cap. Tuder, Cyrus,
Moll, Clarinda, Statera, Grace, Little Mama, Mina, Mary and Jenny, with
last two bought of Cap. Tuder, with their increases I also give to him
my said son George the Planta plantation he now resides upon commonly
called Wee-a-hoe formerly bought of Col. Thomas Cary and containing by
plot and grant Six Hundred and Twenty Acres be it more or less, with
the mansion house, out houses with all manner of utensils whatsoever
thereunto belonging of also the stock, as meat cattle, mares, sheep and
hogs all the furniture to the said house be they of whatever kind or
nature soever also all my plate always exempting such of the bequeathed
previous an also by me shall hereafter be by me bequeathed and given to
my son Patrick and daughter Hellen Logan, I further give and bequeath
unto my said son George two seal rings, two silver hilted ---- a -----
and silver headed cane, my horse Gray with all my horse saddles and
furniture two ---- of pistols and ------- box ---- ------ is my
------ also my standard, all with bequeathed premises I give to him my
said son George and his heirs forever always provided and
it is my meaning that in case my said son George should die without
male issue then my will is that the before bequeathed plantation of
Weeahoe with the mansion house and out houses and stock shall be and
revert to my son Patrick and his male heirs and for want of such male
heirs then to my daughter Hellen and her heirs forever.
Item 6: I give devise and bequeath unto my (son) Patrick Logan
twelve slaves (after my debts are paid as before provided) by names
Hester, Dick, Indian Hester, Glasco, P____, Affea, Great Mama,
______, Part_____, Indian Betty, Judya, Mamona, with their increases
and a Plantation containing by plot and grant, four hundred and sixty
acres of be it more or less which I formerly bought of Francis Gracia
with all things thereunto belonging, but it is my intent and meaning
that if my said son Patrick does not settle the forsaid tract of land
but rather mined to dispose thereof, his brother George shall have the
first refusal thereof and if he gives as much as any other purchaser
will, his brother Patrick then and in such case and no other shall
dispose of it but to his brother George, or to no other person or
persons as my said son George shall consent to, I also give unto my
said son Patrick one silver tankard marked ____ and six silver spoons
also a bed boulter pillows, a pair of sheets, a pair of blankets, rug
and quilt to him and his heirs forever, and for want of such all the
before bequeathed premises, I give unto my daughter Hellen and her
heirs forever:
Item 7: Item 6: I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter
Hellen Logan twelve slaves (after my debts are paid as before provided)
by names Frank, Tom, Tony, S____, Simon, Indian Tom, Maria, Ryna,
Betty, Cinder and Venus with their increases, I also give to my said
daughter all that my tract of land containing about eighty-four acres
be it more or less which I purchased from Mr. John Wright, dead, Mr.
Cartwright and Mr. ____ both dead, which lands leads from Charles Town
up the Broad Path ____ the country with all the houses and wood
thereunto. I also give my said daughter one silver tankard marked
____, six silver spoons, her mother's gold chain, and a feather bed,
bolsters and pillows, one pair of sheets, one pair blankets, rug and
quilt all which before bequeathed premises I give to her and her heirs
forever, and for want of such I give and bequeath the said premises to
my son Patrick and his heirs forever.
Last and 8thly: I make constitute, ordain and appoint my dear and
well beloved wife Martha Logan, and my son George Logan, Executrix and
Exer. Of this my last will and testament: IN WITNESS whereof I have to
this my last will and testament: set my hand and seal this eighteenth
day of March 1719/20 (18 March 1720).
