What
Do Doulas Do?
A doula is a professional labor assistant. The word "Doula" refers to women experienced
in childbirth who provide physical and emotional support and information to help the mother make informed choices during labor
and delivery.
Doulas do not perform clinical tasks, such as blood pressure monitoring, fetal heart checks, or exams.
They offer reassurance, suggestions for labor progress, help with relaxation, massage, maternal positioning, and other
techniques for comfort. A Doula works closely with the expectant mother or couple
providing support, information and resources. Throughout the birth, the Doula
acts as an advocate, helping to ensure your desires
for the birth are met whenever possible.
Use of a Doula has been shown to reduce the need for many medical interventions
such as: Epidural use, Cesarean section, Pitocin and narcotics use, as well as reducing the length of labor.
For
many women, an ideal birth experience includes a relaxed environment where they can feel secure, cared for, and given confidence
in their ability to have a safe and empowering birth. I am available
for home or hospital births, and have been providing labor support services since 1998. My curriculum covers childbirth
education, post-partum and breastfeeding.
Choosing
a Doula
The birth of a child is a very personal, sometimes private, but certainly emotional experience. Being
selective when choosing your birthing team will lend to a more relaxed birthing environment. I feel that it is important
to interview several Doulas to find one who will support your goals during labor and birth, as well as being someone you are
comfortable working with. I offer a free consultation to talk about my services further, answer any questions and discuss
my curriculum.
