The Muse Project Lesson Plans
The Penn Literacy Network – MUSE Partnership Dr. Bonnie Botel-Sheppard, Director, PLN The Penn Literacy Network (PLN) is a comprehensive professional development/curricular enhancement program based in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. PLN has provided on-site creditbearing or non-credit bearing seminars, workshops, and mentoring programs to more than 22,000 Pre K-12 educators across the United States and in Ireland in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and technology since 1981. PLN is involved in this exciting collaboration with The Muse Project out of Laguna Beach, California. The focus of the partnership is the integration of primary source documents and information text with musical versions of American historical documents, such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, to enhance student comprehension and connection with American history. By adding the musical component to the exploration of information texts, we expand the framework to develop strategies for helping students access and produce the academic language of content area texts. Veteran PLN faculty members and other middle school and high school Social Studies, English and Music educators have contributed to the development of the lesson plans found in this handbook.
