The Penn Literacy Network/MUSE PartnershipDr. Bonnie Botel-Sheppard, Director, PLNThe Penn Literacy Network (PLN) is a comprehensive professional development/curricular enhancement program based in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. PLN has provided on-site credit bearing or non-credit bearing seminars, workshops, and mentoring programs to more than 22,000 Pre K-12 educators across the United States and Ireland in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and technology since 1981. PLN is involved in an exciting partnership with The Muse Project based in Laguna Beach, California. The focus of the partnership is the integration of primary source documents and informational texts with musical version of documents in American history (such as the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution), and literature (such as the "I Have a Dream Speech" and "Uncle Tom’s Cabin"), to enhance student comprehension and their connection with American history and literature. By adding the musical component to the texts, (i.e. The historical documents), students are able to access and understand these documents with more meaning. PLN offers professional development workshops that involve educators in the what, how and why of the PLN/MUSE approaches using some of the curricula developed by PLN faculty members in conjunction with Muse Project CDs of the recorded material.
