Literature Circles Grading: READING HOMEWORK
Each student will receivea letter outlining the process and expectations for Literature
Circles to take home and encourage family support since the reading, journaling, and project are the assigned homework for
English. This reading project has taken the place of the writing projects called “Mindmovers” which
were done in the first half of the year.
ü The students were given instruction on the process which included: student novel choice from
the classroom library, weekly meetings with other students reading the book, a calendar to help to plan their time, and suggestions
on how and when to read.
ü Each student was given a
journal and class time to set up the journal (including a rubrics for grading the journal). Each Journal is worth 50 points.
ü A choice of 15 final projects, each of which included step-by-step instructions and the rubrics
for grading the project. The students were given time to choose a project and take the instructions with them. Each Project
is worth 50 points.
ü Point expectations and due dates
ü WARNING: Just because the
journal is done and the project is done, does not award you 50 points. It must be done according to directions, completely,
correctly, and in line with the rubrics to receive all the points. Partial points are given for partial effort.
Upon completion of the book
or the due date (which ever comes first), the student will:
ü Hand in the book and pick a new book
ü Hand in the journal for 50 possible journaling points
ü Hand in the final project for 50 possible project points.
ü All work can be handed in early and student can get a jump start on the next book. The work
is self paced.
For each marking
period:
Total possible points:
50 pts journal + 50 pts. Project = 100 possible points
ü For an A= 175-151 points journal/projects
ü For a B = 150-101 points in journals/projects
ü For a C = 100-51 points in journal/ projects
ü For a D = 50 points in journals/projects
ü For a F= below 50 points
