Chopra, Deepak. How to Know God: The Soul's Journey into The Mystery of Mysteries. (NY: Harmony Books, 2000) Chopra's lucid thought and writing lead readers on a journey indeed, helping us grow steadily more sophisticated and expansive in the way we think about God. A most impressive, exciting book that you will find yourself turning to, again and again, for illumination.

Harner, Michael. The Way of the Shaman. (NY: HarperCollins, 1980, 1990) The touchstone of contemporary shamanism. Harner streamlines and codifies shamanic practices (derived from a variety of cultures) for the modern Western audience. A decent resource for anyone who wants to work with shamanism or similar practices such as visualization, pathworking, or Jungian active imagination. See also: Ingerman, Sandra. Soul Retrieval: Mending The Fragmented Self. (San Francisco: HarperSanFrancisco, 1991) Ingerman is one of Harner’s certified shamanic practitioners and instructors. I much prefer her work with its wise, forthright emphasis on recovery from some of our modern personal and societal maladies--such as depression, addiction, sexual abuse, and trauma. A most valuable book.

Linn, Denise. Sacred Space: Clearing and Enhancing The Energy of Your Home. (NY: Ballantine Books, 1995) You’ll benefit from the multi-talented Linn’s full bag of tricks--everything from feng shui to sound therapy, from Native American practices to Hawaiian kahuna "ghostbusting"-- and make your home a nourishing place of high spiritual consciousness. Also see: Linn, Denise. The Hidden Power of Your Dreams. (NY: Ballantine Books, 1988)

Mariechild, Diane. Mother Wit: A Feminist Guide to Psychic Development. (Trumansberg, New York: The Crossing Press, 1981) A delight, and one of my oldest books in the field of mental visualization, affirmation, and psychic. As usual, in these cases, this deeply poetic, Goddess-honoring book has much that men will also find highly valuable.

Masters, Robert and Jean Houston. Mind Games: The Guide to Inner Space. (NY: Dorset Press, 1972) A program for opening you up to alternate ways of perceiving reality. Remember the John Lennon song? We used this book in one of my college classes back in the early 70's, and I never forgot it. If you can find a copy--and I had to write directly to Ms. Houston some years ago to get mine--it will blow your mind!

Noll, Joyce Elaine. Company of Prophets: African American Psychics, Healers and Visionaries. (St. Paul, MN: Llewellyn Publications, 1991) True stories of Americans of African descent who have demonstrated psychic gifts. I found this book of great comfort as I committed to further developing my abilities.

Peirce, Penny. The Intuitive Way: A Guide to Living from Inner Wisdom. (Hillsboro, OR: Beyond Words, 1997) I can’t praise this one enough. She’s a highly-creative teacher who will capture your imagination and, then, help you free it! Put this one on your bookshelf right alongside Practical Intuition by Laura Day.

Reed, Henry. Edgar Cayce on Channeling Your Higher Self. (NY: Warner Books, 1989) I’m so fond of this book, I’ve read it three times. Reed, using the teachings of famed "sleeping prophet" Edgar Cayce, reminds us that our Higher Self (or Soul) can be every bit as wise and helpful as any spirit guide. Here’s how to get in tune.

Roman, Sanaya and Duane Packer. Opening to Channel: How to Connect with Your Guide. (Tiburon, CA: HJ Kramer, Inc., 1987) Perhaps the best instruction book on how to channel spirit guides. A charming, outstanding book, concrete and specific in its details. For a couple of discarnate beings, its inspiring guides are so wonderfully down to earth! You won’t be disappointed. Also see: Roman, Sanaya and Duane Packer. Creating Money: Keys to Abundance. (Tiburon, CA: HJ Kramer, Inc., 1988) and Roman, Sanaya. Spiritual Growth: Being Your Higher Self. Some, Malidoma Patrice. The Healing Wisdom of Africa: Finding Purpose Through Nature, Ritual, and Community. (NY: Jeremy P. Tarcher/Putnam, 1998) Traditional African values that can help heal the Western malaise. Some, a Western-educated shaman from Burkina Faso, offers his experience and wisdom with great compassion and generosity.

Stein, Diane. The Women’s Book of Healing. (St. Paul, MN: Llewellyn Publications, 1987) Both men and women will find loads of useful information here on energy healing, colors, chakras, laying on of hands, crystals and more. The crystal information is fairly encyclopedic. I’ve been consulting this one, and recommending it to everybody in sight, for many years and will continue to do so.

Walsch, Neale Donald. Conversations with God: An Uncommon Dialogue, Book One (NY: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1996) Gotta admit, Walsch lost me after Book One, but do give Book One a look-see. Yes, he claims to channel God. Make of that whatever you will, but Book One has some wonderful, unexpected material. If you want to go further along with Walsch, that’s up to you.
