November 12, 2005 (W4-2)

It was a perfect day for Great Pretender football. Slight wind coming out of the Northwest, sunny skies, and a turf field. Such a perfect day that Uncle Vince made a guest appearance (just to drink beer, with only 10 minutes left in the game, but he did make an appearance.) The outcome was another Great Pretender victory with a final of 4-2.

The defense did a great job of shutting down the opposing offense, but they did have some help from some poor officiating. One of the opponents goals was on a penalty kick that Mo Meola initially blocked, but alas he had left his line and the opponent got a re-kick. We got the goal back moments later when Paul was taken down in the opponents area and he put it away. Fortin scored a goal after streaking down the sideline and rocketing it past the keeper at a sweet angle. Streaking yes, naked no. Rick, Steve, Phil, and Ice did a great job of shutting down the vast majority of the opponents attack.

Mike J. was back from a long sabbatical and did a masterful job of distributing the ball. Dean, Frank, and Mike controlled the middle. Mo was given a yellow card in the 83 rd minute for unsportsmanlike conduct when he kicked the ball into the woods. According to Mo after the game:  "At least I didn't get a card for pruning my mouth, not this time."

Goals:  Paul (2), Mike (1), Guest Steve (1)
Assists:  Ice (1), Mike (1)

November 5, 2005 (W6-2)

We won 6-2 after being down 2-1 at half time. We played ok in the first half and we scored first then the opponents scored twice one of them on a mistake from Mo. In the second half, we controlled the game and took advantage of the opportunities and scored 5 goals. Mo made a few nice saves to keep the goal clean in the second half. We would have scored more goals in the second half if it was not for the referee calling offsides on a few goals that were called back.

September 24, 2005 (T2-2)

Brandon scored our first goal on a breakaway. A super left-footed curling free kick behind the wall by Roberto drilled in by Totan's header for our the second goal. A red card for Rick (two yellows which were very puzzling). Totan sailed a PK over the bar. Mo played well in goal.

September 17, 2005 (T1-1)

Mo sent a nice through ball on the ground to Dave G., who raced in to put it away and make it 1-0 early in the first half. Even though we were down a player in the first half, we were able to keep the lead as Buzz made some unbelievable saves on point blank shots. In the second half, we were at full strength but had no subs. Gary led the defense and had strong support from Dave, Mo and Mark. Pete, Pat, and Dave G. provided great hustle and controled the midfield. We had some great chances to score but could not capitalize. With no subs, we started to wear down towards the end and the opponent was able to tie the match with a late goal.

September 10, 2005 (W4-1)

We were short several players and the opponent loaned us a few players. Those players turned out to be a big help as they scored 3 of the 4 goals. Mo had an assist on the first goal. Frank and Dave proved once again to be a dangerous team on corner kicks as Frank sent a low cross to Dave who headed it in the corner. The opponent scored a late goal that was too little too late.

September 3, 2005 (W2-1)

On a beautiful day in Algonkian Regional Park, the Great Pretenders came to play. We dominated for most of the game after starting the game early in the first half with Totan scoring on an assisted play that rivaled the “Fumbleroski.” We had numerous opportunities in the half. The match turned rougher in the second half with Dave, Rick, and Ice playing extremely aggressive with every loose ball. This really got to the other team as they began verbalizing there disgust with the lack of calls and then verbalizing words that are unfit to print here in this forum. This may be what happens to teams when Dave throws their players around like rag dolls. We had numerous opportunities in the second half to take a commanding lead, but they failed to materialize. Fortin sent a crushing shot across the goal mouth, Ice hit the top cross bar for the third game in a row, this time from 37 yards out, and Dean just missed one inches left. They tied the game up with one of the luckiest goals seen in a long time. In the waning minutes of the game, Dave lofted a ball from the left side of the field and Dean knocked it in to regain the lead at 2-1 and preserve a Great Pretender victory. Gary, Steve, Phil, and Robbie provided great defensive support from the back.
