Game Summaries

August 27, 2005 (W5-4)

We played a man down the entire match. It also rained off and on throughout the match. We were down 2-0 before we knew what hit us. However, we came back to tie it 2-2 before half time with goals from Frank and Rick off assists from Phil and Mike J. The opponent took the lead 3-2 early in the second half. We came back to tie the match 3-3 when Frank sent a corner kick to Mike J. who head the ball over the keeper's outstretched arms. Dave gave us the lead 4-3 a few minutes later with a header into the upper right corner of the net off another of Frank's corner kicks. We were awarded a PK with about fifteen minutes left in the match and Frank calmly put it away to put us up 5-3. The opponent scored with about 10 minutes left to make it 5-4 but the defense was able to hold on to the lead until to the final whistle. Pat was awesome  today and was the only one who brought beer to celebrate the victory.

August 20, 2005 (L3-2)

Brandon scored two goals off assists from Dean and Mike F. in the first half. We started the second half with a 2-0 lead. We played down a man in the second half and the heat wore us down. Credit goes to the opponent who took advantage of us in the second half and came back to win with three unanswered goals.

August 6, 2005 (T1-1)

We dominated the first half and had many chances but started the second half tied 0-0. The opponent took the lead 1-0 due to an unlucky break on defense about midway through the second half. A few minutes later, Frank received a thow-in about the corner of our goal box, beat one defender to the inside and turned it up field. He dribbled the ball all the way through the midfield with an opponent on his tail and fed Brandon perfectly as the last defender tried to stop him. Brandon carefully placed the ball into the right side of the net to tie the match. We controlled the rest of the match but were unable to finish on a few chances.

July 30, 2005 (L3-1)

It was a close match until the second half. Dave G. scored the first goal to give us a 1-0 lead about midway through the second half. Ice was given credit for the assist. Buzz mishandled a cross that allowed the opponent to tie the match with about ten minutes left. The opponent finished us off with two late goals.

July 23, 2005 (W5-1)

Steve had two goals and one assist. Brandon had two goals. Mike had one goal. Frank had two assists. Rick had two assists. Buzz returns after weeks on DL. Gary, Steve, Phil, Rob played great defense in the first half to make it easy for Buzz who only had to make a few saves. Frank, Pete and Mike J. controlled the midfield with well executed short passes and good movement. We took a 3-0 lead into the second half. The opponent had more chances in the second half but we countered and took a 5-0 lead late into the match. A slight let down led to a late goal by the opponent but a big win was well in hand.

Game canceled due to threat of severe thunderstorms.

July 9, 2005 (W6-0)

Mike F. proved he's like a fine wine getting better with age, as he fired home a hat trick in the 1st half and set up another to lead the Pretenders to a 6-0 rout at Lake Fairfax Park. He scored on a 18 yard shot early, then finished 2 crosses by Dave G. for the hat trick. Later in the half he got brought down in the box and Frankie knocked in the PK.  Brandon finished 2 fine goals, one in each half to round out the scoring.  Pete, Dave, Frank, Dean and Rick controlled the midfield and Steve, Sly and Pat defended well. Mo punched out several shots to preserve the shutout.

June 25, 2005 (T1-1)

In a spirited rivalry at Hencken, we went up early when Dean headed in a great cross from Phil. The Sting took control of the middle of the match and then tied it with 30 minutes left.  Izzy and Reza came close but the Sting defense did well to keep the game level.  Mo was outstanding as he turned away several shots in the 2nd period.  The GP's pressed hard late, but could not find the net. The defense, led by Pete played well, as did the midfield combo of Frank, Mike F, Brian, Dave and Reza.

June 18, 2005 (L7-3)

Playing short handed we were down 4-0 at the half. We made it a game in the second half with 2 goals from Brandon and 1 from Rick.

June 11, 2005 (W3-2)

On a 90 Degree hot day we jumped out with 2 goals from Mike J., both assisted by Mike F. who ran wild and created trouble all day. The Turtles answered back to make it 2-1 at the half. They then tied it 2-2  thanks to on loan Chris McDonald (Phil's son), who knocked in a brilliant back heel off the post then in the net. We stormed back as Bryan calmly finished a great through ball by Dave. Although we attacked relentlessly late, the game ended 3-2.

June 4, 2005 (L3-1)

With Buzz out with a dislocated and broken finger, Totan started in the nets. Brandon scored after the opposing keeper knocked down a Reza free kick Mo eventually made it and replaced Totan. The Metros scored twice on long shots to secure the win.

May 28, 2005 (L7-4)

On a beautiful day at South Riding, a 10 man Pretenders took a 2-1 half time lead on goals by Dean and Mike J, assisted by Brian and Reza. Our opponents had a plentiful roster and staged many attacks in the 2nd half. We never gave up and got 2nd half goals from Reza and Dean but could not hold off the one player advantage. Phil, Rob and school boy Dave Guinter had courageous games in the back, and Mids Frank, Mike F, and Dean fought until the final whistle. Stand in keeper Steve Hoover had to be taken for physiological evaluation afterwards.

May 14,  2005 (W3-0)

Dave sent a long low cross to Rob on the right side, who put it away. It turned out to be the game winner. Heavy rain began as thunderstorms approached from the west. Halftime ended just as lightening struck periously close to the field with us in the lead 1-0. We waited for a lull in the storm and started the second half. Izzy scored the second goal on an assist from Mike F. after a nice throw-in from Rob. A few minutes later, Rob sent a perfect corner kick from the right side which Dave drilled into the goal with a nice header. Gary, Dave, Pat, Mo, Pete, and Phil turned in another solid defensive performance. Buzz recorded his second shutout in a row as the game was called with about ten minutes left due to another lightening strike near the field.

May 7,  2005 (W6-0)

Brandon had three goals. Reza, Mike F., and Dean each had a goal. Brandon, Mike F., Rob, and Ice each had an assist. We were only up 1-0 at halftime. Rick, Pat, Mo, Pete, Phil, and Ice defended well and helped Buzz record a shutout. I guess we wore the opponent down in the second half as the goals started to mount up.

April 16, 2005 (W5-3)

The other team was short so we loanded them a couple of players. Reza scored first on an assist from Dean to make it 1-0.  A few minutes later, Dean scored on a no angle shot from the right side on an assist from Mike F. Near the end of the first half, Dean scored his second goal as Brandon sent a through ball to the left post. We started the second half up 3-0. Phil crushed a shot from 25 yards that found the right sided of the net, making him the oldest player to score a Great Pretenders goal. A short time later, Brandon placed the ball into the corner to make it 5-0. Unfortunately, we had a let down that led to three goals by the opponent in the last 15 minutes. Thus, giving Phil not only the record of oldest player to score a goal, but the game winner as well.

April 9, 2005 (L1-0)

First match of the season and we all looked a little rusty in the first half and found ourselves down 1-0 at half time. We controlled the ball much better in the second half but were unable to score.
