Game Summaries

8/26/2006
(W1-0)
It was a close match. Pat, Totan, and Phil, who returned from a broken rib and collapsed lung, shutdown down the opponent. Buzz came up with some big plays when needed to earn the shutout. Early in the second half, Roberto served a nice corner to Mike J. who headed the ball towards the goal where Brandon finished it off for the game winner.

Goal - Brandon
Assists - Roberto, Mike J.

08/19/2006    (L5-2)

We had a lot of guests today and never got into any rythm as a unit. We were down 2-0 at half time. We were down 3-0 midway through the second half when Mike J. placed a first time volley from about 20 meters into the back of the net when the opponent failed to clear the ball. A few minutes later, Roberto curved a direct kick over the wall to make it 3-2. That was as close as we got.

The defense was awesome. Steve, Pat, and Pete shutdown the opponent and Buzz made some key saves to preserve the shutout. Reza scored the first goal to get us started. Our guest players did the rest of the scoring. Totan and Mike F. played well in the midfield and on the wing.

On a day that was probably the hottest and most humid so far in 2006, the Great Pretenders lost a close one that we should have won. We started and played the game with a huge disadvantage in that only 8 players showed for the start of the game. The other team loaned us two players; but they ultimately may have hurt us more than helped. Frank, Pete, Mike Fortin, and one of the guest split time in the goal. Injuries to both our keepers, to Phil, and to Dave have hurt the continuity of the defense. The offense had quite a few opportunities during the game; but managed only one goal. Ice put a through ball to Rick who drilled it passed the opposing keeper for the bright spot for the Great Pretenders.

Goal - Rick
Assist - Ice

07/08/2006 (W5-3)

An early goal by the opponent and an own goal left us down 2-0 early in the match. We fought our way back and were tied 2-2 at halftime. The highlight was Pierce's free kick that curved over the wall and into the upper right corner of the net. We contolled the ball well and had many chances in the second half. We were up 3-2 when the opponent tied the match as Buzz misplayed the ball as he came out. Fortunately, Brandon got he game winner late in the second half and added an insurance goal near the end of the match. Dave was inducted in the Great Pretenders Hall of Shame after the match.

Goals - Pierce 3, Brandon 2
Assists - Pierce 2, Mike F.

No match scheduled Fourth of July Weekend.

06/24/2006 (W5-1)

Gary returned from an injury suffered last season and looked to be in midseason form. The opponent started with ten but took the lead early when an unlucky bounce gave them a breakaway goal. Brandon scored twice to give us a 2-1 halftime lead. The opponent went down to nine when they lost a player to injury early in the second half. We took advantage of the numbers and kept contol of the ball. The game was not without excitement as Buzz thrilled the crowd building on the hill behind him when he sent a long goal kick that cleared the defense and allowed Brandon race toward the goal and put it in the net.

Goals - Brandon 5
Assists - Frank 2, Mike F. 1, Phil 1, Buzz 1

06/17/2006 (W4-0)

Mike J. scored the first goal early in the match and then the Horton show took over, combining for 3 goals and an assist. Frank's first appearance this season provided a lift. Defenders, Dave, Pat, Steve, Steve (Sly) played well together in the back and Buzz recorded the first shutout of the season. We were up 3-0 at halftime. The second half was a bit closer. Ice had some rocket long range shots that just missed. Mo made some nice runs down the left side. RJ gave Rick an early Father's Day gift in the form of an excellent long ball to Rick who put it in the net for the final goal of the match.

Goals - RJ 2, Mike J 1, Rick 1
Assists - Alan 1, RJ 1

06/10/2006 (L1-0)

We were short several players so the opponent loaned us a few to make it eleven on eleven. It was a close match. We had some chances but the opposing keeper made some spectacular saves. A last minute breakaway goal by the opponent earned them the victory.

No match scheduled Memorial Weekend.

05/20/2006 (W4-1)

The match started late as the second funeral procession in as many weeks had the Route 28 corridor blocked again as another Fairfax County Police officer was laid to rest. May he also rest in peace. It was a windy day. For the most part we were able to keep the ball on the ground with short passes and good ball movement from the defenders to the midfielders to the forwards. We were up 2-0 at halftime. All the second half scoring was done in the latter part of the half. We were up 4-0 but a late goal by the opponent scuttled the shutout.

Goals - Paul 2, Mike J., Pierce
Assists - Dean, Pierce, Mike J.

05/13/2006 (W10-2)

The match started late as the massive funeral procession of the slain Fairfax County police officer had the Route 28 corridor blocked. May she rest in peace. The opponent was short so we loaned them a couple of players and played ten on ten. We were up 3-1 at halftime. The second half was even more lopsided as we scored 7 more goals and allowed a late goal to make it a 10-2 final.

Goals - Dean 3, Rick 2, Roberto 2, Totan, Mike F., Reza
Assists - Mike F. 4, Totan 2, Dean, Rick, Reza, Roberto

05/06/2006 (W3-2)

Both teams started short but we were soon at full strength. We were unable to take advantage and the opponent scored first to make it 1-0 on a rebound shot after Buzz made the initial point blank save. We regrouped at halftime and came out ready to go with both teams at full strength. Pat, Steve, Mo, and Dave turned in a stellar defensive performance. It was a windy day on a bumpy field but our passing was much better in the second half. Totan fed Rick who tied the game 1-1. We took the lead a few minutes later when Pete sent a corner kick to Dave's head. Dave drove the ball down to the line and into the net to make it 2-1. We went up 3-1 when Roberto scored the what would prove to be game winner off a nice back heal by Rick. The opponent scored a late goal to make it it 3-2.

Goals - Rick, Dave, Roberto
Assists - Totan, Pete, Rick

04/29/2006 (W6-5)

Pretenders escaped with a win after a crazy 11 goal match on a great day in Sterling. Brandon opened the scoring early by finishing a thru ball by Mike J. Dave Guinter made it 2-0 with a 35 yard cross which ended up in the net. After Annandale answered to bring it to 2-1, Brandon got his second goal heading in a corner from Mike J for 3-1. The visitors took control during the middle stage of the match to take a 4-3 lead. After a hand ball in the box, Paul Ellis converted the PK to make it even at 4-4. After a 25 yard goal made it 5-4 to the visitors, Mike J slotted a rebounded shot under the keeper to again bring things even at 5-5. The midfield of Ellis, Mike F, Rick and Dave worked hard and the GPs took control with 20 left to play. Brandon, who was dangerous all day, broke free in the box and got brought down from behind. Paul then calmly converted his second PK of the day to give the Pretended the victory. Mo made a amazing close range save late to preserve the win.

Goals - Brandon 2, Paul Ellis 2 (2 PK), Mike J, Dave Guinter
Assists - Mike J 2, Dave
